    Default Virtumonde - GetModule23

I am helping a friend with malware removal. LogMeIn is the service I am using to connect to her PC. I have ran SpyBot cleaned and it requested to run again at startup. It ran again --- said all was good but malware is still there. Specifically Server Busy dialog box with retry and switch to options.
    Here is the HJT log

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

    1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

    2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

    Tutorial
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Remove any old copies of combofix before you proceed.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

    Thanks

I do have a question about your instruction that says to keep the PC off the internet ... the friend I am helping is not very computer savy, so I am making a remote connection to her machine when I need to fix. I am having her disable the network connection except when I log on ... is this going to create a problem?

Your question: no it should not. In my experience, not all but some folks who are infected seem to not realize they often got that way via trojan downloaders, then they continue to surf the same junk sites that got them infected to start with. Given online access, the downloaders continue to download junk and they wonder why they are getting more and more infected. You sound as if you have good control over the infected computer, just avoid all online activity that is not necessary until we kick out all of the junk.

Please read and follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

    1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    2) Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    Code:
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\uucszc.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\thwgpxku.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qaxcln.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\clfjpiuf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AKmWwyxx.ini2

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=-
    "AppInit_DLLs"="avgrsstx.dll"

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{3878fc78-057e-4762-b0f3-1508bf0db154}]
    Save this as CFScript

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log. (wait until you finish to post the logs)

    3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Notes about process I just completed.
    1. HP asked to update and I allowed ... I see this entry in the ComboFix log ----- BITS: Possible infected sites -----hxxp://ftp.hp.com --- so I am a little concerned. I allowed the update to run before I ran ComboFix
    2. ATFCleaner download went as expected
    3. CombFix asked to update – I did NOT update.
    4. HiJackThis. The BHO was already cleaned and I checked the toolbar. There was not an entry that said O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll uucszc.dll. However, there was an entry that said O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll. I did not check this and assumed the original was fixed with ComboFix
    5. ATFCleaner ran as expected
    6. MalwareBytes ran as expected (although I did have to change mirror sites to get it to update before scanning).
    7. After completing your instructions. Windows wanted to install XP SP3 and I installed. However, when I rebooted to complete the SP install hpimzone.exe had to be forced closed, upon reboot several command windows ran, and a notification window that looks like HP said the printer was disconnected - I did not touch this and windows continued to load startup programs. AVG wanted to update and I updated. After that the HP tray icon indicates that all is fine... Ithink I remember the command windows as part of the SP3 installation. I mention the other items becaue of my concern about the ComboFix entry mentioned above. I hope I made the correct decisions and apolagize if I complicated things. The really really good news is that the PC seems to be running well.

Thanks for the feedback, I will comment only on the numbers where I feel it is needed.

    1) unlikely since you are accessing hp.com, the tt has been removed by combofix and when added back the site is no longer available. Have a look at what is going on online:
Infected websites are the next internet security threats
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

    3) CombFix asked to update – I did NOT update.
I am surprised the tool did not shut down? When sUBs wants his tool to update (over a million downloads a month) that is usually what happens when the users does not comply.
    7) Windows wanted to install XP SP3 and I installed
I would not have tried to install SP#3 until we were finished. I had trouble with SP#3 on one of my computers myself. I purchased a CD to work around issues. Once we finish, you can try again and I am about to post a Microsoft support link for SP#3 and the link to where you can purchased the CD for $4/S&H$6= $10.00

MBAM found mostly stuff in the combofix quarantine and infected System Restore files which we will address soon, this is the next important step.

I need to say first, that I do not know how the version of combofix you have on the computer is going to respond to this installation. Since it has already asked to update once, if it asks again, please allow it to do so. Once it installs Recovery Console for us, we will be removing it anyway.

I am sure you saw this:
WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED !!
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
Review that information to understand Recovery Console. Installation is optional but if you do not have the CD's needed, as is explained, it can be installed before we remove combofix.
If you do not have access to Recovery Console via a Windows CD, I strongly advise you to install this tool.
If you do not wish to install RC, let me know so I can continue with the cleanup.
If you install RC, post the C:\*CF-RC.txt*.

Since we do not need to scan with combofix, click NO

    Thanks...Phil

Sorry about the SP3 complication. I should have thought about it more before I installed.
I got a little confused with this part of your last post ... it appears my SP3 installed ok -- do I need to do something with this, or is this just in case I have issues in the future?

it appears my SP3 installed ok
    I looked here:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 10:10:14 AM, on 9/29/2008
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)

and it is still showing SP2?

Recovery Console was installed correctly, here is a little information.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654
Recovery Console is a tool that will allow you to recover from a catastrophic system failure, so let's hope you never need it. Many experts believe Microsoft should have installed it by default.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

    Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Reboot

    Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to make sure we missed none of the junk, no need to post a clean scan result.

Update AVG and scan the whole computer to make sure it is running right and scanning clean. If all is well at that point, let me know and I will close the topic.
