Explorer.exe Application failed to initialize errors

The past few days I have been getting error messages at Windows startup related to explorer.exe, msmsg.exe and iexplorer.exe failed to initialize properly. The desktop never loads, only the wall paper. The exe it complains about varies among the 3 mentioned above. On some occasions Windows loads just fine as if there is no problems.

I ran Spybot in safemode as described in one of your threads and removed a bunch of found issues, but one could not be removed because Spybot claimed it was in memory. I allowed Spybot to load on the next reboot thinking it was catch the malware before it had a change to load, but it didn't. The file it is complaining about is SMITFRAUD-C.

I also ran Hijackthis and created a log.

I appreciate any help you could give me to resolve my issue.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.

Hi Tony, I have no idea if I can help you or not. If you read and follow the directions posted above and pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum and post that HJT log, we will find out.

I am not seeing malware in this HJT log, that is not unusual, hackers are hiding their junk from HJT more and more. We will have MBAM take a look, but first information for you.

Let's start like this:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

To answer your first question, the errors I get on start up alternate between the following:

explorer.exe Application failed to initialize (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the appication.

msmsgs.exe Application failed to initialize (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the appication.

iexplorer.exe Application failed to initialize (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the appication.

Only the first error message causes my desktop not to load. The other two errors allow me to allow me to continue and use the laptop as usual. Other times though when I power up the laptop, I just get a blank screen, no Windows splash screen. I have to power down and try again.

Currently after everything we have done so far, the machine seems to have the same issues. I do have it disconnected from the network. The latest HJT log follows.

Problem: Runtime Error 0xC0000005 is caused by missing system files or broken system registry structures. This is a critical sign of an unstable system that is typically caused by improper maintenance of the computer.

You can also consider a repair installation of the operating system:

What I suggest you try first is System File Checker:
Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.

This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

After doing all of the above, nothing has improved with the computer. After rebooting I got the explorer.exe variation of the error and no desktop. I ran malwarebytes quick scan and turned up nothing. I am running a full scan now. I'm almost thinking of wiping the drive and reinstalling everything, but would really rather avoid that lengthy process.
