    I'd like to know about the file ptsnoop.exe - in start up

    Is it a modem's file ? or a trojan ?

    It may be legitimate if you have a ceratain modem software, or it may be a virus...

    In almost all cases I've seen it's the legitimate item: a program that monitors the COM ports for the modem driver.

    I suggest you upload the file here to be tested: http://virusscan.jotti.org/

    If it scans clean, which I expect it will, there's nothing to worry about.

    You will find like already mentioned most times than not it is legit and seems exclusive to 98's in particular. The filename certainly gives it a hint of suspicion though.

    Another possibility (though unlikely) is this program: http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptsnoop.asp

    It's a not-very-flexible program to monitor programs loading and unloading into and out of memory.
