Default re. [antispyware for Windows 98]

    Hi everyone,

Could you helpe me please ?

    I have a problem.

I use a Windows 98 system at present, and I cannot really afford to upgrade
it to a newer system, and thus a newer operating system.

So I have to try to make the best I can with my current system.

I hear you are ending support for your earlier versions of Spybot ?

Unfortunately, that leaves me rather exposed, because also, at present,
I have no antispyware on my computer.

I have also tried to install some of your Spybot software on my Windows 98
machine, and it just does not seem to want to install properly.

So I don't know in fact, if you have Spybot software that does work on my machine ?

I basically need help to try to install successfully some antispyware software
on my system (preferably the best, if possible), and I am stuck
trying to do it on my own.

Can someone please help me ?

Hello lewis, we're here to help. But first, please read this thread about why support is going to end for dated/earlier versions:
    http://forums.spybot.info/announcement.php?f=4
I have also tried to install some of your Spybot software on my Windows 98machine, and it just does not seem to want to install properly.
How so, does it not install properly? Are you receiving an error message?

Don't worry the latest version of Spybot-Search&Destroy (1.6.0.30) is compatible with your machine (Windows 98). Download it here:
    http://www.spybot.com/en/mirrors/index.html
So I don't know in fact, if you have Spybot software that does work on my machine ?
    This is Spybot-Search&Destroy itself. : )

    Hi again,

Thankyou very much for saying that you can help me, etc.
I much appreciate your comments in your previous email.

Ok, I managed to download what I think is Spybot 1.6.
I tried to get the version of it -- by going to the "about" option,
to see if there was version info there, but couldn't seem to get any.

But, I did download a file called spybot160 -- which I assume is that version.

I get the following error message --

    Error
You need to install the detection updates first by using the integrated
    update or the manual updater.

    Just before that, I pushed the "check for problems button", which led me to this list of things to download, and I let it go through the list, one by one;
giving a number of red crosses, with a "bad checksum message", and a few
green ticks also. So I let it finish going through that list, and then tried to push the "check for problems" button again -- but I keep getting this
error message -- and it doesnt seem to actually want to move past that,. so
I don't quite know what to do.

So that seems to be where I'm at at the moment.

Can you please help me to get past this hopefully ?

    Hello Lewis.
After the instructions (below), I would like you to see if you see the 'About'.
And the file you've downloaded is correct (named "spybotsd160").

What you'll have to do is download this file and execute it, so that should resolve that error you have:

    Hi,

Sorry, I've come down with quite a bad cold, so that's why I haven't been
    doing much of late.

Ok, I went to the "About" part of Spybot, and the version is --
    1.6.0.30

I did download spybot160, and execute it. These problems come after
I've done all that. ie I've been using the menu buttons of spybot,
    and get these errors.

So, I still am getting these problems.

    Hello Lewis...

I also use an older operating system (Windows Me) and encountered some problems when I moved to Version 1.6...

This is what I did; I went to Add/Remove Programs and found that the previous version (1.5) was still there so I uninstalled it... I also uninstalled Verstion 1.6 and then reinstalled it...

After that I checked for and installed all updates to Spybot S&D and I've running fine since...

Lewis, what kind of "errors" are you getting exactly? You are not very clear (or I'm going in a loop).

The error I get, repeated from above, is:

    Error
You need to install the detection updates first by using the integrated
    update or the manual updater.

    Just before that, I pushed the "check for problems button", which led me to this list of things to download, and I let it go through the list, one by one;

I don't quite know what to do.

    ===========================
Should I uninstall and then reinstall, as was suggested ?

Would that make any difference to this problem ?

If not, what else should I try ?

    Hello,

If you search for updates and a 'HTTP Error 403' or 'bad checksum' is displayed, this has a simple reason - millions of people trying to download from the same server.

In order to overcome the problem, please have a second look at the update-menu-bar after searching for new updates. Therefore choose the update site from the navigation bar on the left. Now you'll see the update menu bar. It has a pull-down item to select a mirror. Click the arrow beside it, and select a different location (try the ones located nearest to you first), where you'll most probably have better chances to download. For a better understanding we have placed a picture at this link on our website:
    How to update
In section 4 you'll see how to select a download location nearest to you.

If this sounds too difficult please try to download the updates manually:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Here is the direct download link.
Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.

The information about "bad checksum" is also available in our FAQ:
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/20.html

For more information please do also have a look into our forum:
    Bad Checksum

    Best regards

    Thankyou very much !

    I think it's been fixed.

I also since, ran an "immunize", and that seemed to work very well as well.

Seems like a great piece of software !
