Unhappy Malware Minestrone with Virtumonde ?

    Hi.
I'm new here, please bare with me if I screw up (HijackThis log is at end below-------------)

My desktop PC started going slow several weeks ago. AVG scans had deleted the usual assortment of tracking cookies and very occasionally the odd suspected virus

Something was obviously wrong - There was excessive hard disc activity and it might take a couple of minutes just to start notepad, it would often lock up if several windows were open simultaneously, it would fail to shut down so I would resort to pulling out the lead before restarting.

I downloaded and ran a spyware checker (yes, seriously overdue) and it apparently removed various nasties but did not significantly improve the computers degraded performance

Over the last week or so I have run various other spyware checkers with a variety of results - One result that has appeared a number of times is Virtumonde (sometimes identified as Virtumonde.sci

My efforts have significantly improved the machine but Virtumonde keeps reinstalling -probably after reboot and perhaps needing internet connection as well.
I have come to the point where even I realise that I need help so below is a description of my most recent efforts -hopefully I have done more good than harm.

    -----------------

I downloaded StopZilla after following a link from ://www.safer-networking.com/tools/ (I mistakenly(?) thought that this site was associated with yourselves at http://www.safer-networking.ORG

(safer-networking.com rather seems to mimic yourselves by way of colour scheme etc. -Does anyone know if this site is OK or is it harmful?)

StopZilla identified 2 infections of VXGame & 10 RabioSearch Enhance NOT virtumonde.txt

StopZilla did not identify virtumonde (but f-vmonde.exe indicated that ........StopZilla.dll ? had become infected with virtumonde ! (reboot requested and done during StopZilla installation)

StopZilla identified: 2 infections of VXGame & 10 infections of RabioSearch Enhance:

StopZilla experienced an error and closed

I have not attempted anything with the 10 "Registry Key" problems identified

    No reboot was done

    I uninstalled StopZilla

scheduled run of AVG antivirus Free found ~8 Tracking cookies -user abort before end (usually stops before end anyway)
connect to web & check update of AVG & Spybot

I Ran Spybot S&D which found:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Make sure you read and follow the directions, anything else will slow the process and waste both of our time. I suggest you keep this computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk may download more. If you have any tool I use, delete it and download it new from the link I provide. Read and follow the directions carefully, the tools will not work unless you do.
The junk can be tough to remove, so do not expect fast or easy.
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806
It appears you do have a bit of a mess here, and I will try to help if you will take the time to read and follow the directions which I posted above and are also pinned (sticky) to the top of the Malware Forum.

From this point on, follow those directions, post only what I request, and expect this to take a while. Let's start like this.

    1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly.
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...00031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...120300087.html
    http://www.smartcomputing.com/editor...8s07/38s07.asp

Symantec Shared and AVG8 <<< decide which you are going to run and uninstall the other.

    2) Follow these directions to place HijackThis safely.
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

    3) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

    4) Post an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list
    )
    Image: http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...nstall-man.jpg

    5) Once the above instructions have been followed, post that uninstall list and a new HijackThis log placed as instructed.

    Thanks

Hi pskelly, Thanks for getting back to me.

Ref: 1) "You are running two antivirus programs"
I Thought I Had removed Symantec/Norton Antivirus -but it would appear not. (I recall it might have faied during uninstall)
I have looked through "Add or Remove Programmes" and removed all Symantec programmes I could find (Norton Personal Firewall, WMI Update...)
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared is now empty and I have deleted it.

I hope that first issue is now solved.

HJT log to follow from the sick PC v.shortly & I will continue to work through your instructions.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, looking first at the uninstall list.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.

Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested: https://psi.secunia.com/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 6.0.1 <<< out of date and being exploited, see this:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-100...ml?tag=nl.e433
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
If you want a much smaller progam to do that job, look at this one:
    Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows
    http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 See this information:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
Very old Java programs can be hard to uninstall, that being the case, try this tool: http://www.majorgeeks.com/JavaRa_d5967.html

That is all I see, but you can bet there are more. Hackers are smart, if we go online with unsecure computers or with out of date programs, they will infect us.
Tea timer is off as requested.
TeaTimer is running in this log, follow those directions to disable it. If you can not do that, then uninstall Spybot S&D completely for now.
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

I am not seeing a lot in this log but much malware can be hidden, we will start with a program you have installed, but follow these directions.

(no need to downoad it again but be sure to get the newest database)
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Thanks...Phil

Let's clean up a little, understand items I remove with this at the end
(file missing) are damaged and not working correctly if at all. You should reinstall those items if you use them.

http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat <<< right click the link and choose "Save target as...
    Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
    Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat
to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(suggest you remove all hp redirects, not making your browser run better)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Default Am I clean? -I hope so

    Hi.
Thanks for your latest instructions and info.

Am I clean? -I hope so, the scans have not highlighted any nasties.

Several weeks ago My PC was down to say 30% of its normal performance
By scanning with spyware checkers I had got this up to maybe 50% when I contacted your forum.
With your help it is up to maybe 70% -Thank you ever so much, I could not have done it without your help.

70% is good but not great and I do need to spend some more time reading and utilising some of the security / performance links that you have recommended.

The computer now hopefully being clean I feel that it is now safe enough to run disk cleanup, defrag, and install XP service pack 3 which was automatically downloaded a few weeks ago (should I do a fresh download to make sure it is clean?)
I was delaying installing service pack 3 because a full backup is overdue and I have found backups problematic because some of my filenames /pathnames are too long.

Other issues I will be dealing with are that the PSI scan now gives 100% in simple mode but is only 79%

Should I at some point reinstall Spybot S&D? Presumably I should uninstall Malwarebytes first?

I could leave Malwarebytes on my desktop PC and run Spybot S&D on my laptop - Would mixing anti spyware programs (& indeed anti virus programs) across my PCs diversify my protection - or would it diversify my exposure?
    - My gut feeling is that mixing anti virus programs across my machines would diversify my protection because one machine could highlight infections when files are copied from the other machine- but mixing anti spyware programs would diversify my exposure because an undetected infection on just one machine could access the backups held of the other machine.
Can we get the best of both worlds by setting the security software on one machine to double check the files on the other over a network connection?
-Does this make any sense? - Obviously I need to sort out my basic housekeeping and security before I worry too much about this.
-Luckily most of my files are really boring! -As punishment we should make spyware writers look at all of them.

    ------------------------------------

My intension now is to check the rest of the housekeeping and security issues and if the performance is still poor maybe uninstall Malwarebytes and try some other checkers such as housecall etc.

I will let you know how it goes but in the meantime I would be grateful for any suggestions, observations and information you may have.

    Thanks,
    -keep up the great work!

If you have any issues with SP#3, Microsoft has made free help available here: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (All Languages)
    http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...3&gprid=522131

If you did not register PSI, the final version was released today. Just follow the prompts and the old version will be uninstalled before the new version is installed. http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

MBAM and Spybot do different things. MBAM has a smaller database that targets rouge malware (hackers block MBAM and downloads) so keep it updated and run it once a month or when needed. Spybot with the bigger database will look for other malware.

As for the rest of your comments, if you will read the information from experts I posted, those questions should all be answered, if not, post to let me know.

    Thanks...Phil
