    Default Now servers available

I have installed v 1.4 and there are no servers showing in the drop down list. If I try to download or check for updates, I get the following error message:

"error retreiving update file, socket error #10053, software caused connection abort.

I'm running WinXP Pro, SP2 installed. I've tried with and without firewall turned on. I've added Spybot to the exceptions list. No luck. I've downloaded new definitions from the website and run a check, it found a couple of small things, but nothing to speak of.

Any thoughts as to why I can't get a server list?

    Thanks,

    Frosty

    Hello Frosty.

    Software caused connection abort.
An established connection was aborted by the software in your host computer, possibly due to a data transmission time-out or protocol error.

If you are sitting behind a proxy server:
Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings. About 2/3 of the way down the option tree there is a category "Web update". Check the last item in the list "Use proxy to connect to update server". A pop-up will come up were you can enter the information required.

I'm not behind a proxy server. I also seem to be having a problem in IE, after some research, I have found some things to try which I will do and see if that helps. I will post me results here a little later on.

    Thanks,

    Frosty

Update, 7:21AM EST ran winsockXPfix.exe downloaded from http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2852 you will need to register for the site, but they have many great ideas and tools for fixing any number of IE connectivity/network problems.

Once I ran this utility, IE ran great and Spybot found updates and the servers.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Frosty.
I am glad that worked out for you and thank you for letting us know.

I have let GTG know they linked members to majorgeeks for a download of Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix 1.3.1 TX

Not only is 1.3.1 TX outdated it was an unauthorised and unsupported test version of Spybot-S&D meant for internal use only.

Of concern to me is why you needed the WinSockFix utility to repair your connection in the first place.

A broken WinSock can be associated with an infection.

If you would like someone to check out the system and have not already done so at another help site; please go here and follow instructions to post a hjt log.
