Fraud.ProtectionBar Trojan

[FamousSpacewhale]

I ran Spybot and it found the trojan Fraud.ProtectionBar. I try fixing it but after running a new search the trojan is still there. Also, after fixing the trojan, spybot reports the following change:

Edit, FYI; "BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance)

Any help on getting rid of this trojan would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

• Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
• If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
  select
  Advanced Mode
  
• On the left hand side, click on Tools
• Then click on the Resident icon in the list
• Uncheck
  Resident TeaTimer
  and OK any prompts.
• Restart your computer

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to the Desktop
http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer to restore them upon reactivation).


Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
• Please post contents of that file & a fresh hjt log in your next reply.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.
• Scroll down to where it says
  The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  
• Click the
  Download
  button to the right.
• Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
  Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Note: Uncheck MSN toolbar option if you don't want to install it.

Does Spybot still find the bad item? If it does could you post back the findings, please?

I ran Spybot again and if found the same threat, except this time it was able to fix it successfully; I didn't get the report for a change from Spybot and it doesn't show up in scans anymore. Thanks for your help, your info and instructions were really clear and easy to follow.
