    Default Virtumonde aftermath (non-critical)

    Hello,

I've spent much of the day fighting Virtumonde, and now, my system *seems* to be clean.

But since this was such a nasty infection, I was wondering if someone might take a look at my HJT log anyway, just in case. There is an item in it that turns up 0 results in a Google search (edsjbc.dll), which is a huge red flag for me.

    A bit more to do.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=-
    "AppInit_DLLs"="avgrsstx.dll"
Copy the entire contents inside the Quote box and Paste it into Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) name the file Regfix.reg and in the drop down box, save it as All Files. Save it to your desktop. Then Rightclick on the Regfix.reg file and click on Merge, when it asks you to merge with the Registry, say yes.

If you saved the file correctly it should look like this

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
    • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<-- Don't forget this
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.

Thanks very much-- you're right, my system wasn't clean yet, as the infection popped up again a few hours after I made that post. I managed to finally kill it (I think) the next day, but I'm using your fixes also just in case.

Can I ask, what does that registry fix do? (I'm going to guess it prevents avgrsstx.dll from ever being loaded?)

    Good Morning,

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: avgrsstx.dll edsjbc.dll <--These both load at start up, the regfix removes them both and then puts avgrsstx.dll back which is required for your AVG Anti Virus.

Need you to follow the fixes and post the logs please

Hi! Thanks again, here are my HJT and Malewarebytes logs. On the surface, I seem to be clean now (knock on wood).

    Looking good

A couple of things to go over. You need to upgrade Internet Explorer from IE6 to IE7, IE8 is available but its a Beta program which means its not fully tested and still undergoing changes. Your call if you want to install it but you definitely need IE7, its a more secure browser than the previous version. You can get it through Windows Updates or here.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx

    • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
    • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
    • It should have an icon next to it:

      Select it and click Remove.
    • Reboot your system.
    • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
    • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
    • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
    • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
    • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.
Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
    • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
    • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
    • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
    • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Thanks so much for your time. I'm bookmarking this list of anti-malware programs for future use.

I'm not sure why Java shows as not being up to date-- I uninstalled Java and reinstalled it from the Sun site literally 2 days ago, when I read that old Java could be a source of a vulnerability that let Virtumonde in (and yes, I removed both old versions from add/remove programs).

    Thanks again!
