    Default Program crashes constantly

I have been using software for more than 1 1/2 yrs and over the last 2 weeks the program has begun crashing everytime i click "yes" in the dialog box confirming that I want to remove items found during the scan.

I have updated all files and can't figure out what is going on.
    Help!

    bfl13:

What Windows operating system are you running?

What version of Spybot - Search & Destroy are you running (Spybot » Help » About)?

In addition it would be help if you posted the log (Checks.yymmdd-hhmm.log) of the actual detections you are trying to fix when the problem occurs (see note below). There are two methods to copy and post that information from a previous scan:
    • Method 1:
      • Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Tools > View Reports > View Previous reports. Look for the Checks.yymmdd-hhmm.log file that contains the detections that you were trying to fix. Open it. To copy it to the Clipboard, right click on the listing and select Select All > Right click again and select Copy. Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of the Clipboard into a new post in this thread.
    • Method 2
      • The Checks.yymmdd-hhmm.log and Fixes.yymmdd-hhmm.log files are stored in the following folders:
        • Windows 95 or 98:
          C:\Windows\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
        • Windows ME:
          C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
        • Windows NT, 2000 or XP:
          C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
        • Windows Vista:
          C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs
      • Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the correct Checks.yymmdd-hhmm.log. Double click on it and it should open with Notepad. To copy it to the Clipboard, right click on the listing and select Select All > Right click again and select Copy. Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of the Clipboard into a new post in this thread.

Note: By default here are two Checks.yymmdd-hhmm logs produced during a scan. The second Checks.yymmdd-hhmm has the details of what the scan found. A Fixes.yymmdd-hhmm log is produced if you fix or attempt to fix something.

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.

    bfl13:

I don't know what is causing the crash. However, it appears that you posted a Fixes.yymmdd-hhmm.log file that indicates all the items were fixed. If this is the case, then the crash is occurring after the confirmation dialog was answered, the detections fixed and the log written to the …\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Logs directory.

You could try to eliminate the confirmation dialog and see what happens. To do that:
    • Go into Spybot » Mode » Advanced mode (answer yes to the warning message if necessary) » Settings » Settings.
    • In the option tree under "Main settings" uncheck the following item:
      • ■ Display confirmation dialogs before doing critical changes.

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.

    Default thanks 4 suggestion

i will make the change in the settings and see what happens tonight.

the weird thing is that although the log says it is "fixed" all the same errors are identified again by spybot even if the scan is rerun immediately after the crash occurs.

    bfl13,

If by crash you mean that when you click on fix, Spybot basically shuts down or "drops out of the program", and you are running Office 2000 then try this.

At the completion of your next scan, and before you attempt to fix any items, look for the following tracking entry in the to be fixed list:

MS Office 9.0: Recently used files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Office\Recent\

Click on the "-" sign to the left of the item to open it up, left click on the contained item to highlight it, then right click and select Exclude this detection from further searches.

I have experienced this problem on all of my XP computers that had Office 2000 installed. It has been reported on the forum previously but I wan't able to find the reference to it tonight.
