Default Need help with Virus Removal

Have run "VundoFix"; it didn't find anything. Symptoms are as described for that problem, though. Can't turn on automatic updates, get pop-ups all the time, etc.

    Here's the HiJackThis log:

Since my original post, close to 4 days old, things have seriously deteriorated. I have gotten infected with "Spyware Protect 2009" and have been unable to get rid of it. I have tried the following:
    - Safe Mode running of McAfee Virus Scan with updated definitions
    - Purchasing SpySweeper and running multiple scans with it
    - Looking on the web for removal instructions. None of them work 'cause I don't have any of the files the instructions say to remove.

My updated HiJackThis log is shown below, which was taken in Safe Mode. Please help. I can only use my computer in Safe Mode.

"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance)
Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds, can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. In addition helpers would think you are already being assisted because of the post count. For that reason we may merge such posts if there is time but please do not count on it.
The Waiting Room: Post here if waiting for help longer than four days
If you have waited FOUR full days without a response (HJT Forum ONLY) please give a link to your topic here, so it doesn't end up being archived.

Hello and welcome to the forums
    Sorry for the wait.

    You're infected.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

    ============

If you want to try the cleaning - follow these instructions.

At first you need to disable a few realtime protections. These may interfere with our cleaning process.
We'll enable these when you're clean...

    Disable SpySweeper's realtime protection.
    • Open Spysweeper and click on Options
    • Choose Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
    • On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything.
    • Uncheck "home page shield".
    • Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
    • Exit the program.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

    * Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

    Download and Run SmitfraudFix

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Run the file, it will extract Smitfraudfix to its own folder and run.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Default Definitely want to get rid of this stuff!

Thanks very much for your help. I do want to try to rid the computer of this infection. I appreciate the cautions; I'm hopeful that my firewall has protected me sufficiently.

I configured SpySweeper as instructed and disabled my McAfee virus scanner.

    Here's the ComboFix log:

    Hi again, we'll continue

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

You seem to have LimeWire installed. We'll uninstall it - Forum policy

You also have this EmpirePoker installed. I would advice to remove it.

Remove LimeWire via Control Panel, Add/Remove programs.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
    Do NOT run yet.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    Reboot the computer.

    1. Close any open browsers.

    2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "c:\\Program Files\\LimeWire\\LimeWire.exe"=-

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=-

    Folder::
    c:\Program Files\LimeWire
Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

    Use the Windows search
    • Start
    • Search
    • All files and folders
    • More advanced options
    Checkmark these options:
    • "Search system folders"
    • "Search hidden files and folders"
    • "Search subfolders"
    • Search for this and delete if found: lvcwfm.dll

    Run ATF Cleaner
    • Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

    • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
    • Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
    • Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
        Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
    • Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
    • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
    • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
    • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
    • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

    ================

When you're ready, please post the following logs to here:
    - MBAM's report
    - a fresh HijackThis log
    - Combofix.txt

    Default Next steps completed

Hi there - back for some more arcane instructions (that I seriously appreciate, BTW)!

    1) I removed Limewire and Empire Poker.

    2) All of the entries in the first HiJackThis log were there and I did a "fix checked" on them.

    3) Here is the new ComboFix log

The computer has been running MUCH better, even after the first set of "cleaning" you had me do.

Do you advise that I keep both McAfee and SpySweeper running together in the future? I only purchased SpySweeper to attempt to get rid of this stuff and I'm not sure I need it. Would appreciate some advice.

    Thanks!

Looks very good now, nice to hear that the pc is running better.
Yes you may use SpySweeper and McAfee at the same time, they won't interfere.

    Some leftovers.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

    O9 - Extra button: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: EmpirePoker - {77E68763-4284-41d6-B7E7-B6E1F053A9E7} - C:\Program Files\EmpirePoker\EmpirePoker.exe (file missing)

    And delete this file:
    c:\program files\EmpirePokerSetup.exe

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
    • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

    Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
