Question No USB autorun after clean

    Hi
I did recently go though a clean here. Just great , but I did since then notice a small change on my computer I can't figure out myself.

When I connect my USB devices, XP don't show up anymore the window where I can choose action. And that's still when those things are set to on if I go to "properties" of that device.
I did read very little about this that the problem should be coming from my last visit here. But I read too same place that it for safety reasons a good thing have it turned off. Hmm

I have added Winpatrol and Malwarebytes Anti-malware to my system from that clean process. I have a feeling that is Winpatrol who block it, but I am not sure.

I just want to know where the problem might be placed and how to fix it, of cause if somebody knows it.

    Thank you

    Meizu

Obviously first I would personally recommend that you keep auto-run off.

Malware authors have begun to exploit the autorun/autoplay feature, so the author of ComboFix, in an effort to help protect your computer from becoming infected via that avenue, configured ComboFix to disable it. Many security apps disable it as well, and even Microsoft recommends disabling it. Disabling autorun/autoplay does not prevent you from accessing those media sources. They are still available by opening My Computer and accessing the source drive (cd, dvd, usb flash or external harddrive). Pictures on a camera can still be accessed/transfered through My Pictures and selecting Get Pictures from a Scanner or Camera. Media can also be accessed via the program you intend to use it with, such as music cds accessed via Media Player, blank cds via your burning program, image handling software provided with the camera, etc.
And that's still when those things are set to on if I go to "properties" of that device.
I recommend the Windows PowerToy, TweakUI

    Look under the 'Auto-Play' section

Thank you very much. I see I was right.

I have then installed tweak UI on my system but things don't seems to work.

Did you mentored that Tweak UI should let it work again?
Combofix is no longer on my system.

    Sorry my bad English

I understand why disabling autoplay is important and I will for sure keep it off, but I still want to know to the way how turn it on again.

Disabling auto-play is a preventive measure against accidentally accessing an infected flashdrive/thumbdrive. Some prefer to leave it on, some prefer to leave it off. Thing is that it is up to the user to decide.

I've just tested TweakUI, and you can find the Auto-play function under "My Computer">Autoplay.

    Good luck with that.

Sorry I did't have any luck today...
I have set everything on in TweakUI but I still don't get the auto-play message where I can select tasks like I did before the clean. And that's on all of my devices.

I can go My Computer -> Device -> Right-click -> Properties and see if Windows will ask me what to do. This function is also activated but I still don't get the pop-up message

I have tired looking for similar function in Winpatrol but there isn't really anything to find. Things are also a bit complex there.

WinPatrol will not hinder or intefere with the AutoPlay function, you can trust me on that because I'm a Plus user.

The basic idea of autoplay, would be say you plug in a flashdrive into one of your desktop's USB port (2.0), then your screen will pop-up with a message. If you have your speakers on, you'll hear a sound.

If you should insert a music CD, AutoPlay will prompt you that a CD with music files has been detected. You can play it with Windows Media Player, etc.

Are all the drives selected in TweakUI? Did you find the My Computer>AutoPlay tab?

Yes, I did also try insert a CD for that matter but I still don't get any message like you said. Just strange....

FYI things do nicely show up in My Computer and I can use them, but no message.

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.

    Thanks,
    This help on the problem
It says there is a local policy error if I checking my devices with AutoFix
It repairs it and doing a reboot I then finally get autorun on that device.
Unfortunately AutoFix say I am just need log off an log in again to let it work and proceed to next device, but it still say this message when I did log into my computer on new. I just did reboot and that did unfortunately fix that problem.
Maybe I just need keep rebooting for my rest of my devices, I think its works by this way...
