WIndows looses taskbar and the desktop looses all the icons

[Just call me not normal]

I am in need of some help here. My boss gave me his used laptop to fix and I am at a loss of how to get it fixed. The problems that I have seen are very different each time it boots up. I basically need help from the ground up to get this fixed if possible. Right now I am running spybot at boot up and I am getting the BSOD if you will in windows XP pro when it gets about half way through it. Where do I go from here? Thanks for you help.
