My PC is expeciencing problems. PC freezes unpredictably requiring hard shut-down. Web links are redirected to strange sites. Punning XP sp3; IE7; Trend Micro Internet Security is my firewall. Trend will not update with the error "An error prevented your security software from connecting with the Internet..." Ran a patch from Trend support with no success.

Tried to download the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool but IE cannot open the page. Google search brought me to Spybot.

Installed Spybot. S-S&D icon shows in system tray. When I launch S-S&D I see an hourglass for a few seconds and then nothing. Each time I do this I see a new process in Task Mgr. S-S&D will not update.

I apologize for the wait, volunteers are swamped at all forums with infected computers. If you have resolved your issues, please post to let me know so I can close this topic.

If you still need help, and you have read and followed the "Before you Post" directions, post a new HJT log since it has been four days, and I will take a look, please describe any recent symptoms.

Whatever it is, it is well hidden from HJT, since TeaTimer is NOT disabled as directed, please review the instructions in "Before you Post" again:

Thanks for your response. My apologies for taking so long to get back to you. Was traveling wthout sick pc.

More symptoms:
Trend will not update. Trend firewall log shows multiple connection attempts to 94.247.2.193 even with no browser window open. I Googled the IP address and found: http://www.threatexpert.com/threats/...eon-gen-j.html. Tried to download the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool but IE cannot open the page. I downloaded Ad-Aware to try to remove the trojan, but although the program seems to install, it will not update and therefore cannot be used. I uninstalled it. I installed Spybot for the same reason. It will not update either. Interesting that 3 AV programs will not update on this PC. I uninstalled Spybot & TeaTimer. Google preferences are not saved. When I do a Google search, and click a link, The page mostly, but not always, goes to an address beginning with 67.210.14.41, and winds up on a strange web page.

I must apologize also, the notification I was supposed to receive when you posted did not come If you still wish to continue, do so like this.

Nothing showing in the HJT log, let's start by having combofix take a look.

1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

2) A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
• See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
• Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
  
  
• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Having previously been an MS Exchange manager where 99.9% uptime was required, I am very conservative when installing software that may be critical to my survival. So I wanted to manually install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console and ensure that it starts successfully before committing to the ComboFix install and its installation of the Recovery Console. And this turned out to be smart. I ran C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons and received an error that setup was unable to connect to the windows update web site. Possibly because the web site changed with XP-SP3 or my malware is blocking the site. I “continued anyway”. When I started the Recovery Console on booting, I was looking at a blinking unresponsive cursor.
So I am currently downloading SP3 to another pc and will burn a cd when that is done. Then I will install the Recovery Console from that cd. When that process succeeds, I will install ComboFix and proceed with your instructions. I will post my results in the forum. Expect it on Tuesday, 2/17. Thanks.

A favorite trick of hackers is to redirect you to what they want you to see, that is why we are running tools, to locate what they have hidden.

Are you using a router?

While I agree with you that the installation of Recovery Console is very important, I believe it should have been installed by default by Windows, if you are having trouble installing it, we can do that before we remove combofix, once the malware has been removed.

So I am currently downloading SP3 to another pc and will burn a cd when that is done. Then I will install the Recovery Console from that cd.

To my knowleded, Recovery Console is NOT part of SP#3. It would be on an original Windows XP CD but if you have that you can boot to RC from the CD and have no need to install it.

Since I am not sure what is causing the problem yet and combofix is likely just the first step in trying to find out, I would appreciate it if you would continue with combofix and we will concern ourselves with RC later.

This afternoon Trend Micro support remote controlled my PC (from the Phillipines!) and removed the trojan. She used gmer to find a hidden service: gaopdxwowbobvd.sys and gaopdxserv.sys. The strange connection attempts to 94.247.2.193 stopped. Trend updates correctly. Spybot loads, updates, runs & scans correctly. And google searches correctly. So I believe my problem is solved and you need not spend any more time with me.
