Default Update button behavior of Spybot 1.6.2

When I click the Update button nothing happens. I thought this might indicate that there were no updates available, but when I went to the Safer site there were indeed updates available. This also happened with the previous version of Spybot. I'm running on Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

In this case there were updates so something is broke, but I would hope that even when there are no newer updates available that Spybot will tell me that I'm up to date just as in versions from years past.

    Hello,

The updates are downloaded with the installation until you have disabled that feature in the wizard.

Your response confuses me. I have already installed whatever version. The issue is that the update button does nothing when I click it.

Perhaps I'm confused about what the update button does. I thought perhaps in adddition to notifying you of new Spybot versions it also notified you about new definitions being available. It did neither for the version prior to 1.6.2 and for 1.6.2 it neither verifies the presence nor the absence of new definitions.

    Hi universespy,

which other security tools do you use?

Are you sure to be free of Malware?

Did you un-install the old version before installing 1.6.2.46?

How long do you have this problem? Did you have the same problem with 1.5.2 and 1.6.0?

    Best regards,

    Hi,

    > which other security tools do you use?

I use Norton Internet Security 2008 as well.

    > Are you sure to be free of Malware?

Spybot, Anti-Malware and Norton have found the occasional tracking cookie both with Spybot version 1.6.0 and 1.6.2 installed. After 1.6.2 was installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware found the "infection" adware.shoper with 5-6 entries in my registry, but says it cleaned it. Spybot and Norton never reported it just various other tracking cookies at various times.

Btw, I requested an update to Spybot detection on this forum in the appropriate area for adware.shoper.

    > Did you un-install the old version before installing 1.6.2.46?

No. Nor did the new version give instructions to do so.

The problem was intermittent with 1.6.0, but it's all no go with 1.6.2.

    Thanks all so far,

I think that Norton don't make problems.

    What you can try:
Un-install Spybot completely from your computer. After that, reboot and install 1.6.2.46. Do you still have problems?
Some users have problems with the updater when installing Spybot 1.6.2 over previous versions without un-installing the old one.

    Best reagards,

Reinstalled 1.6.2 after uninstalling and the update button has worked properly time after time. Thanks.
