    Default Internet Explorer Issues

G'day, I have been trying to find a reason behind the chaotic behaviour of my IE. I am currently using FireFox to get around this until it is fixed. Frequently when opening multiple tabs, IE will freeze up in the one tab and cause my right click to be disabled. This can sometimes bleed into other things but after a restart it is back to normal.

Then, just this morning, it had a fit and started to continuously open blank tabs, then when that was full it opened a new window and began opening tabs there.

    Something is fishy.

I am using PC-cillin as my antivirus.

Here is my log from Hijackthis:

Hello and Welcome to Safer Networking,

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

    • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

    1 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
    alternate download link 1
    alternate download link 2

    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

    On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:
    • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • The log can also be found here:

      C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
    • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2 - download and run RSIT

    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt<- (will be maximized) and info.txt<- (will be minimized)

    3 - Status Check
    Please reply with

    1.the logs from RSIT (log.txt ,info.txt)
    2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
description of any problems you are having with your PC

    Thanks peku006
I don't help with logs thru PM. If you have problems create a thread in the forum, please.

My computer is still running as it was when it was first reported to be acting funny. Internet Explorer still has those almost random times when the tabs continuously open and wont stop opening, and the right click issue when opening tabs. It seems that there is no way to predict its occurance, but you can almost guarantee that it will happen at some point.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Hi editorfox

Have you tried run Internet Explorer 7 in 'No Add-Ons' mode.

Problems can result when add-ons, such as ActiveX controls and browser
toolbars, conflict with Internet Explorer 7 or if they are damaged..

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
    (No Add-Ons)

    Thanks peku006

Well, I wasn't even using I.E about an hour ago and my computer started to act funny. I couldn't open any documents, it said null or something like that. I also couldn't right click, and when I opened up a file, I didn't get a toolbar on the left hand side. I think the two issues are related.

    Hi editorfox

    EVENT VIEWER

Let's have a look at Windows Event Viewer. It might give us a clue as to what is causing these issues

Go to Start > Run - type in eventvwr <Press Enter>

You will see Application, Security & System listed in the left pane.
    • In the left pane click on Application.
    • Click the gray title "Type" at the top of the source name column in the right pane to sort by type name
    • Look for "Error" & double-click on the most recent 10, and evaluate the event description for any indication of the cause of the problem.
    • Make note of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties.
    • From the right pane, doubleclick on the line where it says error & you should get a window like the example below:
    • In the upper right corner of this picture, you should see 2 arrows. One is pointing up & the other, pointing down.
    • There is another button below the 2 arrows. Click once on it. (this will copy some information to clipboard)
    • Open notepad & paste the info in there. This will copy the event information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each event here

    Thanks peku006

When the issues occurred on my computer without Internet Explorer there was no error message, I reset my computer and things went back to normal. It seems that everytime I turn my computer off, I get a warning (not a message box, but in this event viewer.) Just incase, I am posting it below.

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Userenv

    Description:
Windows saved user VIXEN3\Gavin Kroeger registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

    Hi editorfox
Let us take a deeper look.

    1. Please download OTListIt2 by OldTimer from Geeks to Go. Save it your desktop.
    2. Double click on OTListIt2.exe to run it.
    3. Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
    4. Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
    5. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
    6. When done, two Notepad files will open. Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply. One log per reply please.

    Thanks peku006

Under the extra registry section there is no 'safelist' option. It just has 'yes' and 'no'. Which one do I have checked when I scan?
