    Default Simply won't start

I try to start the program, and an hour glass appears for a moment before disappearing. I've tried restarting and reinstalling it several times and nothing works. This is also the only program that this appears to happen to.

    Hi jareddm3,

    to Safer Networking Forums.

Which version of Spybot have you installed?
Which operating system are you using?
Which other security tools (firewall, Anti-Virus tool, Anti-Spyware tools, etc.) are you using?

There's the possibility that Malware blocks Spybot from starting.

    Best regards,

    jareddm3:

Some malware prevents Spybot (SpybotSD.exe) from executing. If this is what is causing your inability to execute Spybot, possibly the following procedure may overcome the problem:
    • Using Windows Explorer navigate to the following directory:
      • C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
    • Look for a randomly named file with a .scr extension (JLOSSAOBEIIZCOIQOD.scr for example) that is the same size as the SpybotSD.exe file.
      • If you don't see SpybotSD.exe, see Note #1.
    • Double click on the randomly named file with a .scr extension and see if Spybot executes.

Note #1: Starting with Spybot 1.5.2 some of Spybot's executables are hidden as protected operating system files. To see them:
    • Using Windows Explorer navigate to:
      • C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
    • In the Tools menu select Folder Options…
    • In the Folder Options dialog select the View tab.
      1. Under the "Hidden files and folders" options:
        • Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected.
        • Not "Do not show hidden files and folders".
      2. Uncheck the following option:
        • Hide protected operating system file (Recommended)
    • Click the Apply button.
    • Click the OK button.
    • The files should now be displayed.

Note: If you uncheck the "Hide protected operating system file (Recommended)" option to view Spybot's executables, I suggest that you return the option to its original setting when you are done.

Getting an answer is one thing, learning is another.

    I have version 1.5 I believe.
    I'm using Windows XP
My normal windows firewall is up and I have spyware blaster running.

And I seem to now have a much bigger problem. I can't open my C drive. It says "Cannot find RECYCLER\S-9-1-53-(even more numbers).com"
I have no idea what this means.

There doesn't seem to be any files with a .scr
I would definitely say I have signs of Malware.

Also, it doesn't allow me to directly access anything in the C drive. I can only access it by using the search window. Unless "searching in hidden folders" would also reveal any files with a .scr, I haven't been able to check.

Can you try renaming the Spybot desktop icon?
By the way, if you wish I can provide instructions for you to help get the malware cleared out from your machine.

    Default Same problem

...And I did find a bunch of those scr files in the SB folder,

    http://s88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...current=SB.jpg

which I deleted. Then re-booted. It still doesn't start, even when I try from the .exe file (not the shortcut). I can see the program in my Windows Task Manager, using 12K of memory, but that's it.

I have, I believe, the most recent version as I installed it about a month ago.

    Hi Springerrr,

who said that you should delete theese *.scr files?? Theese files are an alternative start for Spybot, if Malware blocks the original SpbotSD.exe !!
As md usa spybot fan already said:

Moreover, please open your own thread next time. It's always a little bit confusing, when other users want to discuss their problem in a foreign thread.

There was nothing clearly marked as .scr but when I search for .scr I it pulled up all my screensavers and one file from the Spybot folder. Clicking on this did the same thing as clicking on the normal spybot icon. A moment of thinking and than nothing.

Renaming the shortcut also did not help.
