    Default Unable to update Kaspersky

Hi - I am unable to update my Kaspersky Internet Security. I tried to download the zip files and update from a folder, but that also failed. Tried to run the online virus scanner from Kaspersky - also with no success. I suspect I have a bigger problem! I've read the "BEFORE you POST" thread and have backed up my registry. I don't have Spybot-S&D installed. Below is the HJT log. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, and posted above are the directions, make sure you have read and followed them.

What we do is remove malware and you are having an issue with updates for your antivirus program. I believe you should probably take up that issue with Kaspersky technical support:
    http://usa.kaspersky.com/support/

Having said that, I see issues in the HJT log that may or may not be part of the problem and adware that should be removed, here is what I see at first look.

    1) C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< this indicates you are running a very old Java program (Kaspersky uses Java) that is unsafe and should not be on the computer.

    2) E:\HiJackThis.exe <<< probably running from removable media, and unsafe. If we need backups, we will not have them. Follow these directions and fix that.
Since the "Before you Post" instructions plainly describes how to properly locate HJT, I am having a hard time understanding how you can say you read them since the HJT instructions were not followed?

Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log.
Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list
    )

I've tried to follow instructions this time. I've included a new HJT log as well as the uninstall list from HJT (with items removed as instructed). I wasn't sure if you wanted me to uninstall the very old Java, so left it until further instruction. Thanks very much for the willingness to help.

Let's start with the uninstall list...

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.3 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.4 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.5 Update
Adobe Acrobat and Reader 6.0.6 Update
    Adobe Reader 6.0.1

all of these are out of date and my guess would be dangerous, see this:
    Adobe Reader 9.0
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-100...ml?tag=nl.e433
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 2.3 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
    http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03 <<< this is the very old version I mentioned. Since Kaspersky using Java, there is a very good chance this old Java version is causing your issues. You might want to ask tech support but one way or another this old version is dangerous, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
    http://searchengineland.com/microsof...java-15413.php
http://raproducts.org/ <<< some folks have trouble uninstalling old version, if that is the case, this tool will help.
(your issue is gone when you get the newest Java version onboard)

I suggest you consider adding Spybot S&D to your security tools, here is information:
Please be sure Spybot S&D is up to date and fully immunized.
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2008-07-08.html
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html
(I also suggest you do not install Spybot S&D until everything else is working right)

HJT log: You have one adware item that is unlikely to be causing your issues:
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/23a879e5...p/RdxIE601.cab
    http://www.systemlookup.com/O16/1123.html <<< see this

Here is what I would like to suggest.

    1) Update Java, make sure that old program is uninsalled as well as the other items I pointed out.

    2) See what happens when you try to update Kaspersky now.

    3) If you still have issues, contact Kaspersky tech support to see what they advise. Once that issue is resolved, let me know. At that point, I will suggest some cleaning, removal of that adware item I posted and a scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to look for anything hidden.

    4) What are your plans for installing SP#3?

    Thanks...Phil

Phil - I removed the old java and installed the newest version and, after upgrading to the newest version of kaspersky, i was able to update. Thanks a million for helping me - I also feel much relieved that it wasn't something more serious causing my problem.

I also updated a few other outdated programs (and deleted a few that I don't really use). I also installed the windows xp sp3.

I did another HJT today and the adware line is still there. Please let me know what I should do to remove it and if/when I can go ahead and install spybot.

Here's the HJT log - and, thanks again.

Let's do some cleaning and run MBAM to check for malware. Follow the directions carefully and in the numbered order.

    1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(you can leave the HP redirects if you use them)
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...lion&pf=laptop
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...lion&pf=laptop

    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/23a879e5...p/RdxIE601.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

    4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
