    Summary
click each of those links on the left with the red X on the same line and follow the suggestions.

then run a new test until you are 100% or the best you can get, then post a new HJT log and give me a performance report.

When was the last time you blew the dust out of this computer with canned air?

    Thanks

Never tried the canned air, I’ll look into it.
I'll work through the recommendations as suggested and post a new log, unfortunately this won’t be until the weekend at the earliest.
Once again thanks for the time taken and I’ll give you a progress report on my return.

Dust can get into the motherboard and fans and seriously degrade performance, as can not running ScanDisk and Defrag, here are a few links. I am also posting other links that might help you with performance.

Malaware, spybot & Mcafee now all show as clear. Working through the suggested performance tips, which seem to be working. A bit of trouble with some start-up items in msconfig as claims I’m not an administrator even though it is.
Apart from that everything seems much improved.
I’ve attached a latest HJT log, hopefully this will show as OK.

Thanks once again for your time and effort; I was worried the pc was completely knackered.

A bit of trouble with some start-up items in msconfig as claims I’m not an administrator even though it is.
When you sign in, are you signing in ad administrator or your user account?

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_logon.htm

If that does not help, please post the message your receive word for word, exactly as you get it.

    Hi

When I try to change via msconfig I get
“An Access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an admin account to make specific changes”

The account that loads on start-up shows as an administrator account in the user accounts section.

I tried booting in safe mode as per some of the links and was given another administrator account option. I tried msconfig in here with the same result.

If I make the changes & restart msconfig pops up each time saying revert to normal start up.

See if any of this information help, seems you are not the only person with the issue:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq=

Time constraints keep me from reading all of the information, but I saw references to missing files so you might want to try System File Checker:
    http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/ <<< tutorial here

If you can't resolve it from that information, I suggest you ask for help here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/

    Thanks
