Backdoor detection

Hi all

I wonder if anyone could explain whether Spybot S & D can detect a backdoor in tempered commercial software.

I need to use an old version of a commercial program (a .exe file) and am a little concerned that it may have been tempered with. It seems that backdoors can be very hard to detect by anti-virus or anti-spyware programs.

Can anyone shed some light on this subject matter?
