    Default Browser crashes/redirects

Help requested. I am experiencing frequent browser crashes and redirects from search engine web pages. Any help is greatly appreciated. I ran Spybot with no villains found, but haven't done anything else yet. My log:

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

Pinned (sticky) to the top of this forum, and posted above are the directions, make sure you have read and followed them.

Is that a wireless router I am seeing?
    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/secur..._wirele_1.html

I am not seeing anything in the HJT log, we will start our search like this.

    1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

    2) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Tutorial if needed:
    http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum...ware-mbam.html

    3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Did you look at that information about the router? I can't see where you responded and I am still not seeing anything in the HJT log and MBAM scanned clean as I am sure you are aware.

Let's look at the uninstall list and then we will have Kaspersky Online Scan (KOS) take a look.

    1) This can be done as time permits, but it is important, and may be why you are infected.
Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:

    2) Go here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp registry free and run the scans. When you finish post a link to the results so I can view them. There is no need to purchase anything.

    3) Do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

    http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...=1213442456390

    1. Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
    2. Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
    3. The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    4. After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
    5. This will start the program and scan your system.
    6. The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
    7. Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
    8. Now, click on the Save Report as button.
    9. Save the file to your desktop.
    10. Copy and paste that information in your next post

    Default still working here

I'm still working your fixes and appreciate your help. I don't want to get lost in the shuffle, so I'm reposting a mini-update on my progress. Please offer some clarification, if you would.

--I did see and investigate your initial post regarding my wireless router. The link didn't specifically state a way I could see if I was affected though. I use a wireless router for my 2 machines (1 desktop, 1 portable laptop) plus a game console. I haven't had any problems with my desktop or my console however--just with the laptop. on my router, i use a non-default network id and chose my own passwords for "general use" as well as for admin purposes. i don't think i'm using any defaults. from the link you sent me though, i didn't see a way i could "verify" that i wasn't affected by this issue. i'm open to other suggestions on this matter though.

--regarding your install list suggestions. i'll work them as time permits, like you suggested. by the end of the week, i'll try to get them all done. thanks for those inputs.

--the pitstop link seemed to indicate that i should only use IE to download and run the scans, so i'm trying to get my IE functionality up and running to do so. unfortunately, tonight when i used IE it wanted me to update my settings, but hung up when i tried to do so. i don't use IE typically, so i may need to reinstall?

--wanting to do your suggestions in the order you suggest them, i'm holding off on the #3 kapersky suggestion until i get the #2 pitstop scan run. that might take a day or two. i know we both have other jobs so i appreciate your patience while i work through your algorithms.

i felt the need to respond so as not to seem unresponsive or unappreciative for your help. any ideas you have on my above difficulties/desire for clarification is appreciated. thanks for what you do.

I did see and investigate your initial post regarding my wireless router
It does offer a load of information and links to information for ways to secure your router since it is becoming a favorite way to redirect you by hackers. If you need more information, contact the website of the manufacturer
for information on how best to secure you router.
the pitstop link seemed to indicate that i should only use IE to download and run the scans, so i'm trying to get my IE functionality up and running to do so.
    You have IE7 installed?
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16791)
Never had a problem myself, but I use IE7, here is a tool you can try:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
Do you get any error message when this happens? If so, post it word for word.

You can run Kaspersky anytime you can, running out of reasons for your issues and I am hoping Kaspersky (KOS) will provide some. Kaspersky (KOS) requires Internet Explorer also I am fairly sure.

Another possible, though the symptoms do not seem right, is to check for Conflicker.

    Tutorial:
    http://www.pchell.com/virus/maliciou...ovaltool.shtml

    1) Click on Start, Run
    2) Type MRT and Press Enter
    3) You'll be presented with the following screen, click on the Next button

Scan results: If anything is found.
Follow the instructions below to open a notepad.

    1) Click on Start, Run
    2) Type the following and Press Enter

    notepad c:\windows\debug\mrt.log

copy/paste the contents <<< I do not need to see this if the scan is clean.

    Thanks

    1) It won't hurt to run Malicious Software Removal Tool to be sure Conflicker and no other malware in the data base in on the computer.

    2) Appears you ran combofix at some point?
However if one has run tools/fixes before posting please inform your helper, so that s/he is aware changes may have been made to the system and why. Running fixes before being assisted can destroy evidence of an infection, leaving the malware difficult to detect.
    3) Manually remove these files/folders:

C:\32788R22FWJFW\Tail.com <<< delete that folder in red and any contents

C:\ComboFix\Tail.com <<< delete that folder in red and any contents

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-2026312149-346687338-3991154378-1006\Dc21.exe Empty the Recycle Bin on the Desktop
Restart the computer and scan again with KOS, there is no need to post a clean scan report.

    4) Under "Summary" look at Recommended Fixes, click the link for each item and review the information. I suggest you follow the advice, but do not suggest you make any purchased. The diagnostic and the advice are free.
I also suggest you review the information under all tabs to learn much about the computer.

    Default update

thanks for the ongoing support. my schedule allows for only a few steps at a time, but i'm getting there. i ran the microsoft scan--it was clean.

i deleted the files and folders you directed, restarted and am running the kaspersky scan again. i'll have to leave that to run overnight. i hope to get to the re-installs you recommended in the next 1-2 days and will post all the results and an update on how my browsers are running at that time. i didn't want you to think i was no longer interested in your help.

    regards--
    pj
