CPU spikes for no reason to 100% and turns the computer off for no reason

Hi,

I was very stupid when my wife told me she wanted Excel.
I tried downloading it off a P2P network and got a whole raft of malware. The malware changed the date of many of my files (e.g install date 2045) and stopped me from using system restore function. It also started crashing the computer. Suddenly the CPU using will spike from virtually nothing (e.g 4%) to 100%, the computer will freeze and then turn off. I know the CPU can't be from overheating as I have cleaned all the filters of dust. I also can't now use the microsoft downloader to get service pack 2 as I am worried that I have a vulnerability in my system. When I get to the download page it just tells me some of my files are missing and I end up going round in a circle. Also I don't know if this is anything to do with it, but my monitor often flickers.

Intially Spybot would crash when I ran it. I then re-started the machine in safe mode and run Spybot SD, Ad-aware and Ewido. Ewido found a whole load of bugs (about 120) which I've now quarantined. I cleaned the memory of system restore. I've also had a look in regedit and can't now see anything suspicious.

I also seem to pick these ones up so I was wondering if I got them from the Sports Illustrated website as I look at it quite regularly.

I tried using Panda ActiveScan in normal mode, but my computer CPU spiked and it turned itself off. I will try to use it again in safe mode.

I have been wondering with IEXPLORE.EXE or cidaemon.exe. Every time the CPU spikes for no reason, task manager shows that one of these two programs has jumped loads in CPU usage. Usually it is IEXPLORE, and it jumps as high as 70% for a short while. Perhaps the malware deleted or changed some regulatory file(s) and that is why it is mis-behaving ?

Hi Shelf Life,

Thanks for replying again. Unfortunately the computer is still suddenly switching off - but the CPU seems to be spiking much less often and now I know its most probably not to do with Malware.

I'm thinking that it must have something to do with heat. The other day it was very hot in the computer room. When I turned the computer on it would only get close to completing start up, and then switch off.

I'm afraid I've got a couple of questions I was hoping you might answer:

1)Do you think it is ok to turn System Restore back on or will it restore some of the malware I got rid of ?

2)I can start in safemode when I go into msconfig. I can't when I try to do it when I turn the computer on and press the function key. It kust says 'OS missing'. Do you think this is significant ?

3)Have you got any ideas on reasons why I can't download from the microsoft website to get Sevice Pack 2 ?

turn System Restore back on

not yet, make sure computer is "clean" first because some trojans, virus can get archived in the restore points.

I can start in safemode when I go into msconfig. I can't when I try to do it when I turn the computer on and press the function key.

to reach safe mode, try this; during a computer restart tap the f8 key, chose first option: safe mode

why I can't download from the microsoft website to get Sevice Pack 2

not sure why.

this time we will do everything in safe mode. first check for updates to ewido. next boot into safe mode, you can reach safe mode by tapping the f8 key during a computer restart, chose first option safe mode.

once in safe mode run ewido anti-malware and save the log it generates and post the log in your next reply

I can't use the F8 key during the computer re-start to get to safemode as it just says 'OS missing'. I get there by using msconfig.

Another question I wanted to ask is that my mouse sometimes jumps around. Do you think that is because I've just got an old mouse ? Many thanks indeed

looks like its time to make new restore points:
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot
