    Default WinPC Antivirus

The only thing I have done so far, besides what was listed in the BEFORE you POST, was to bring up the task manager and ending the WinPC Antivirus task when it started popping up windows all over the place. Thank you so much for helping.

    Hi monicatittle

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post

I am not at all happy to read your post. I simply do not have the money to get a new PC right now, so it looks like I will be reformatting. Unfortunately, due to a particularly nasty divorce all of my back up disks and Windows XP disk ended up destroyed so I'm truly going to have to buy Windows again and start over.

I will most definitely follow your advice about changing my passwords and contacting my financial institution.

I have never done a reformat before so I will need help with that. Also, since I definitely don't need to be online from this machine anymore, I will have to follow this thread from my computer at work. I will be printing up any instructions you can give me on the reformatting there and then performing them at home. And I'm guessing I will have to do this on both drives.

I'm headed out to work now so it may be a little while before I can read any replies. Thank you so much for any help you can give me.

You might not need disks if your computer has recovery partition.

    Which brand it is?

    I see.

Then we can attempt to clean it if you like to.

All passwords need to changed from another computer however if you choose to clean.

Since my drives were pretty old and small and there was a really good sale on 1TB drives at a local computer store I decided to go ahead and just get a new drive and install Vista. Only the new drive is connected. I changed all of my passwords from my office computer, and have reinstalled all of my drivers. I downloaded and installed AVG, am currently installing all the updates to Vista. Next I'm going to download and install Spybot. Is there anything else I need to do?

Also, now that I have a clean system, is there any way I can get some of my files and information off of those infected drives?

Thank you so much for your help.

Well I think that you can burn most important things (documents, pictures and so) to blank CD/DVD and transfer them that way.

So I can hook them back up and access them as long as I don't boot to either of those drives?

Yes but I really don't recommend to back up anything but documents, pictures and so.
