Suddenly no audio

I am running XP on a Panasonic laptop. SoundMax HD Audio device.
I am a couple of weeks out from an update to sp3 (after a virtumonde infection). Everything was running well, and I suddenly lost audio. No system sounds, Xp start up, and no media players. By looking at the system, sure looks like I should be able to hear something, but alas, no.
I have gone through the troubleshooting and checked for defaults, updated drivers, enabled devices, etc. It is not muted. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not work.
Ideas?
