I'm assuming you mean shut down and restart the computer in safemode and then see if spybot starts faster then.
    Yes,that's what I meant.

I managed to get HJT running by renaming the executable AND the folder from

    c:\program files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

    to

    c:\program files\TMHJT\knights.exe

I'm guessing whatever malware I have is blocking the running of known anti-malware executables. Nasty Stuff!!

I am running Windows XP Pro SP 3

My machine is a Dell optiplex GX270 with a P4 3.00GHz CPU and 1 GB of RAM.
My dad's Dell Optiplex GX260 with 512 MB of RAM and updated Windows 2000 SP4 is also slow to boot up. I noticed the memory and CPU usages grow during startup. I just assume it was the slow computer. :( I also see this with SuperAntiSpyware Free edition when updating and starting up.

512MB is more than enough to run Windows 2000 Professional, as Windows XP Home Edition runs fine...

    Perhaps a cluttered startup?

Not really. Other programs run fine.
