    Default horiddly slow internet

My father brought his computer over to me the other day because it had over night just become extremely slow. The programs take for ever to load, and when surfing the web it takes MINUTES to load a page. Now I built this computer so I know its not a slow POS. Anyways... I ran a few different scans on it (after defragging the HD and chkdisk scan, memcheck) and found the usual small frys but, after removing them the computer remained slow. After watching the programs intract with a process viewer I noticed that his firewall(Outpost Pro) and anti-virus(nod32) were stepping on each others toes by constantly scanning what the other was doing. Changing the settings so they no longer did that helped but, I said what the hell and removed them both. Now the computer has speed up quite a bit from its slow as stalagmite growth sped but no where near its old speed. The internet speed remains as slow as a 14.4 modem.

Well if you read all that I thank you here is what you wanted to see.

    Hi,

How much memory does the system have installed?

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
    • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
      1. DDS.txt
      2. Attach.txt
    • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Thanks for responding I was beginning to worry.

The computer is a Athlon 64 3.0MHz with 1G Ram

Since the last hijack scan I realized he was running in a sort of safe mode. He was using msconfig to turn off some processes. here is a new hijack log with the others that you wanted.

    Hi again,

Uninstall these vulnerable Flash versions (latest one can be downloaded here):
    Adobe Flash Player ActiveX
    Adobe Flash Player Plugin

Make also sure that installed Adobe Shockwave Player is not older than one here.

    Uninstall these vulnerable Javas:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_01
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.1 + update 9.1.2 for it) here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here.

Is Acrobat used for more complicated things than produce PDF from given document? If not, it should be uninstalled since the version there is not supported anymore and contains vulnerabilities that can be used to attack into system. Some free PDF writers can be found here.

When has the hard drive been defragged previously? If not done lately it's recommended to run defragger, like Jkdefrag.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

    Under Main choose:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Cookies
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache

    *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot and post a fresh dds.txt log.

aww... rather sad that you don't accept 7z files as it is the best compression that I have found.
We support zip cos it's one that has built-in support in Windows. For 7z for example you'd need separate program and that's what we try to avoid

Hey Im actually able to use the internet now... although its still fairly slow but, I am posting on this site with the problem computer. Now my comparison for how slow the computer is, is going to a site like yahoo and just loading the main page. On my computer it comes up in a second even with cleared cache. On the problem computer it took a minute or more to do it. Now it only takes about 15 seconds or so... but its still a long time to me. Loading a content filled page like newgrounds takes a good while to load too. Watching the internet graph in taskmanager shows lots of blank time when downloading a page.

    Hi,

Do both computers have same specs and use same browser?

I can't see any infection related there. You may see hints for improving system performance here.

No the specs are not the same but, the download speed of the affected computer seems to be locked to 4k max and as I said it has alot of space in between actually data transmissions/receives. EX. Make a download request and I get a few packets and then like a 1 second pause of nothing... then some more packets and another second of nothing... I would say that the affected computer is dropping lots of packets or something... i don't really know. Inserting a new network card in the computer and disabling the old one has no affect.

Really at this point, I am really grateful for your help but im leaning towards telling him to just backup everything from its current point and doing a clean install to see if its the OS. I know he won't be able to reinstall some stuff but, in its current situation, it is just unacceptable if it can't be fixed.

btw I looked at the link and I have already done thoes things. What im bugged by this whole event is that it literaly slowed down over night. It was normal one day and the next time it took for ever to boot and do anything. I figured it was registry or most likely an infection. Since you believe there is no longer and infection that leads me to registry but, a registry scan shows no problems. So other then a clean install im out of options unless something on the motherboard gave out.

    Hi,

As you said, clean install might be in order here since there doesn't seem to be any sign of infection and I can't figure out any reason for those symptoms.
