    Default Generic 13.atph help please

    G'day everyone,

I noticed one of my machines was running like a dog and tried to run spybot over it but it would not run. Upon further investigation AVG showed that I have Generic 13.atph.

I have been reading through your forums and have downloaded combofix from one of the recommended sites. I have renamed the file as recommended, to combo-fix.exe. I had to uninstall AVG as it kept interfering with the scan.

My scans only get to 'Completed Stage_50' and then it hangs. Once it got to another section that said moved files to recycle bin but again hangs - when I say hang I mean I am leaving it to scan over night and still same screen so not just impatience. I have run the scans now over 10 times and am please seeking extra advice to those given on previous forum posts if possible?

My internode (isp) download tracker has seen it eat up 40GB of 'downloads' in 10 days, I am not sure where files are being downloaded to from this thing, but am assuming not my machine as it doesn't have that much space free. I mention it as now my machine is on dial up speed and I do not know if combofix is trying to get online at any stage but is now too slow?

I would appreciate any help if possible.

    Cheers
    w0mbat

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

I am not sure if I can help you are not...you said:
I have been reading through your forums and have downloaded combofix from one of the recommended sites.
When reading through the forum, did you read the "Before you Post" instructions posted above and pinned (sticky) to the top of the forum? If you had you would see:
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806
and in the case of combofix, even the creator of the tool posts this:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
You should not run ComboFix unless you are specifically asked to by a helper. Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained. If you do so, it may lead to problems with the normal functionality of your computer.
If you will take the time to read the "Before you Post" instructions and follow them and post the required HijackThis log, I will look to see if I can help.

Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

    Hi,

    Good pick up

I used to work for rail as an employee and bought this machine a few years ago as it was decommissioned. We got a new local admin pass and told no support. I have not worked at Rail for 2 years and work at a telco now and do not log on to any domain at all.

Hope this helps getting it over the line

    Thanks

Thanks for that feedback, let's see what we can find out. Please do not quote all of my instructions, waste of space since you can scroll to them.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87

    1) Right click MyComputer then click Properties. On the General tab in the lower right corner is the RAM count, post that information.

    2) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.
(leave TT disabled until we finish)

    3) We may use combofix later but will want a fresh copy. Please delete combofix from your computer if you have not already done so.

    4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://intranet.railcorp.nsw.gov.au
    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} -
    O16 - DPF: {5e2a3510-4371-11d6-b64c-00c04faedb18} (Oracle JInitiator 1.1.8.18) -
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = rail.nsw.gov.au
    O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = rail.nsw.gov.au
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{9D58715B-3B1F-41A9-8B1A-F9196E2C5F74}: NameServer = 192.168.1.254
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = rail.nsw.gov.au

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

    7) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Wow thanks for all your help, looking good so far.

Uninstall list - all applications in the text file are fine.

    Updated:
    Flash Player
    Reader 9.2
    Java v14

Spybot ran (for the first time). Disabled Teatimer (still disabled).

    Did HijackThis and "fixed checked".

    Ran ATF Cleaner.

Malwarebytes found 8 items - identified c:\Qoobox - no idea what this is. I have not deleted this (though tempted to! hehehe).

Thanks for the feedback, C:\Qoobox\Quarantine is where combofix quarantines junk it finds until removed from the computer.
Open that folder and post the contents if you can so I can take a look.

Looks like HJT could not remove the old Tcpip information:
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = rail.nsw.gov.au
    O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName = rail.nsw.gov.au
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain = rail.nsw.gov.au
    See this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...2.html#O17Diag
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

RAM: while Windows XP will run on that much, it is certainly not too much, see this:

Because this is a rootkit infection: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit
Let's see if we can now get combofix to run. Please read the tutorial carefully so you know what to expect as you proceed.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

    Please continue as follows:

    1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

    2) Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

    Thanks

Apologies for the delay, I had major milestone due on my project of launching some satellite broadcasts over DVN - went well!

There is Global Policies set, so things like the domain names I don't think can be removed (same with my very old AV - 2yrs old!).

My machine seems to be acting like it's normal old self now. I wish I knew what site or program infected it in the first place so it isn't re-visted.
    Thanks for all your time

    combofix instructions:
Click on the Save button, and when it asks you where to save it, make sure you save it directly to your Windows Desktop. An image showing this is below.
This is where you put it?
    Running from: E:\Combo-Fix.exe

There is Global Policies set, so things like the domain names I don't think can be removed (same with my very old AV - 2yrs old!).

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

I can't tell you exactly where you got infected, but I can tell you about the infections.

and you had this adware junk:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
I am also wondering why you are still running Service Pack #2 (soon updates will no longer be available to that Service Pack)
and why you are running such an outdated version of Internet Explorer?

Let's see if we can wrap this up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

    Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Reboot

    Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)

Update Network Associates and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean. If you have problems with the program, contact tech support for instructions.

If all is well at this point, let me know and I will close the topic.
