Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

I am wondering why you have not installed Service Pack #3 yet? Please do not do this while we are working on the malware removal.

Let's start with some information for you.

HijackThis is not located as instructed in the "Before you post" information?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSys2] D:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys2.exe <<< this item is showing in the HJT log, see the google:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
I am 99% sure that is malware, just what malware and what may be hidden from us remain to be seen.

zlcommdb.dll <<< appears to be part of Zone Alarm, why Spybot is trying to remove that file, I do not know at this time.
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
I would like you NOT to use Spybot S&D and make sure TeaTimer is disabled as instructed while we try to resolve these issues.

If you wish to continue, we will start like this.

    1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

    2) Follow these directions to properly locate HijackThis:
Download Trend Micro Hijack This™ to your Desktop
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...HJTInstall.exe
Doubleclick the HJTInstall.exe to start it.
By default it will install HijackThis in the Program Files\Trendmicro folder and create a desktop shortcut.
HijackThis will open after install. Press the Scan button below.
This will start the scan and open a log. <<< close HJT until you need it again.

    3) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe <<< download

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

    Tutorial if needed:
    http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/topic,5946.0.html

    4) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
(You may edit out Microsoft, Hotfixes, Security Update for Windows XP,
Update for Windows XP and Windows XP Hotfix to shorten the list
    )

Thank you for your prompt reply.

The system is dual-boot, MSDOS and XP. Windows is on the D drive. If I have the opportunity, I install applications to the F drive. This is my wife's computer. Her data is on the G drive. My data is mirrored to the H drive.

You ask why SP3 has not yet been installed. Perhasp mistakenly, I thought that SP3 might interfere with accessing and copying data between the two PCs. My PC runs Win 2000 SP4 and hers (as you know) XP SP2. I access data on her PC using PowerDesk; she does similarly. She has an AutoIt script that copies data files with the archive bit set to my PC, for backup. Some years ago I wrote a program in VB that does backups per an .ini file. Photos reside on her PC; some directories of them are organized from my PC using an AutoIt script/application. So we do need access to each others data.

You can now see why HijackThis is on the D: drive. In downloading and installing HiJackThis I did follow the instructions in "BEFORE you POST" but today I checked my installation log for this PC. On 2008-06-04, I had an hourglass that flashed every 30 seconds or so. HouseCall found Adware_BrilliantDigitalEntertainment. I had it delete it, and installed HijackThis to check that it was gone.

To make sure that we are in step, I ask: should I now remove HijackThis 2.0.2 installed on 2008-06-06 via Add/Remove Programs? Before downloading HijackThis as you instruct?

I will continue to follow your instructions when I receive your reply.

FYI winsys2.exe | Properties shows version as 1.0.0.2 but no other properties. Suspicious? I have not knowingly installed an overclocking program: http://www.what-is-exe.com/filenames/winsys2-exe.html

zlcommDB.dll |Properties shows it to be part of ZoneAlarm 6.5.737. The created datestamp is consistent with my log: it shows that ZA was installed in Apr-May 2008.

I am following a policy of having ony one of the two PCs connected to the Internet at any time, and preventing the two communicating: I plug in one or the other into the router.

Spybot S&D was scheduled to run daily. This is now disabled. TeaTimer is not set to run. I have never used it on this PC.

Not familiar with dual boot systems so keep that in mind as we proceed. I am however, familiar with malware.

Reference HJT, it is not the drive it on but how it is installed that is at issue. If you wish to run it from there, create a folder and move the HJT.exe into that folder. Backups for safety and logs will also store there and can get lost or deleted on the Desktop. Will look like this:
    D:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Desktop\HJT\HiJackThis.exe

I'll see if I can post the information, but I understand at some near point you will no longer be able to access Windows Critical Updates unless you have SP#3 installed.

I believe we can proceed at this point, just be sure to have MBAM scan all drives then post:

    1) The MBAM scan results
    2) HijackThis log run after MBAM is complete and restarted if need be.
    3) The uninstall list.

    Thanks...Phil

Since Virtumode infected the PC, on start or restart, the Desktop showed without icons, then Spybot S&D auto-ran, then icons showed, then command.com boxes showing for a second or so. MBAM caused a restart after showing the scan results, but none of the above ran.

Files with the names of the infected files were "compiled" AutoIt scripts I created at least 6 months ago. By "compiled" I mean interpreter with script: they appeared to be compiled.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX <<< out of date and unsafe:
Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87
    http://www.adobe.com/support/securit...apsb09-01.html

Adobe Flash Player ActiveX <<< check this

Adobe Reader 9 <<< believe this needs a security update:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/securit...apsb09-07.html

(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 3.0 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)

Java(TM) 6 Update 6 <<< out of date and unsafe:

Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.

Let's have combofix take a look. I see nothing good about this item:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinSys2] D:\WINDOWS\system32\winsys2.exe
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
and it would be rare something is not hidden. Please read and follow the directions carefully.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

    Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

    Thanks

    Phil,

I have updated all the items in the uninstall list except, of course, Adobe Flash Player ActiveX. In Add/Remove Programs, this shows neither size nor last used date. I have switched to Foxit Reader 3.0.

I downloaded and installed ComboFix, following the instructions on the bleeping computer site. The log is:

    ComboFix 09-07-29.03 - Chris 2009-07-29 22:08.1.2 - NTFSx86
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.1023.644 [GMT -4:00]

Good morning Chris, let's do some cleaning and see how things are running.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

How is the computer running now, any malware issues?

    Thanks...Phil

    Phil,

I followed your instructions re HJT | "Do system scan only" with the two line items checked. With only HJT running, I clicked on "Fix Checked", and confirmed twice.

I ran ATF Cleaner, selected all, and clicked on "Empty Selected". ATFC said it had freed 4,920 kB.

I read the article on cleaning Prefetch. D:\Windows\Prefetch contains only 5 files totalling 501 KB. So I elected not to clean it out. In the registry, the EnablePrefetcher is 3 (Prefetch everything). "Everything" being not much, I elected to leave it at 3.

    I ran SS&D. It found no malware. I note that SS&D is v. 1.5.20. Should I upgrade?

The PC is running fine. Maybe it's a bit faster than before I started this dialog with you. As you will remember, I started this thread because SS&D showed Virtumonde.

    What further?

    ...chris

Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< strange this is not showing the old version, please uninstall the old version, update to the newest version and make sure you are fully immunized.
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/index.html
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/index.html

Let's of information online about Prefetch, you should look it over:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=f&oq=&aqi=g10

What prefetch is supposed to do is make information you use a lot available so you can run faster. After a while the file can become cluttered and can cause the opposite to happen. On my computer the file is here:
C:\Windows\Prefetch so yours should be D:\WINDOWS\Prefetch Keep an eye on the file, hackers were hiding there junk there but it seems them have stopped?

Let me know how the Spybot scan turns out once you update and if all is well we will remove combofix and post some information to help you stay clean.

    Thanks...Phil
