I just noticed something. On the microsoft update page, you can view your update history. Everytime I shut down my computer it tells me there are updates to install, which it downloads, etc. and then shuts down like it should. I just looked at my update history, and the only updates that have not failed are 'windows malicious software removal tool'! All of the other updates (except for 4 dated 9/1/09) failed. That's 500 updates that have not worked! Is this the virus causing them to fail? How do I fix this?

I went backwards on the timeline, and the last day that windows updates were installed regularly was on July 16th, 2009. The next day has Explorer 8 failed, SP3 was cancelled, etc. From that point there were very very few updates that did not fail.

Microsoft emailed me a link to their newsgroups and I have posted my problem on windows updates, but have no response yet.
    Hi,

Since you have opened a topic at Microsoft forum I recommend we close topic here and you wait people there to reply. It's no use to have multiple topics open and I believe forum helpers there know more about windows updates functionality than I here

Should I get final instructions from you first to complete the virus removal?

    Hi,

Logs didn't show any infection anymore so I'll give you instructions for cleaning the tools we used.

    Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now copy-paste Combofix3 /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

    • Double-click OTM.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the
      Begin cleanup Process?
      prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTM attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Here's what I would like to do. I would like to get the final instructions that you mentioned in post #97 after I download the new anti virus and firewall software. I will do that now, before I get the SP3 issue solved with microsoft. I assumed that the windows update problem was related to the virus issue, but I will work on their forum to get the update issue resolved there. Is that okay with you?

There are two Combofix exe's on my desktop. I could not get them to run so I renamed them. One is m1a2r3y4.exe and the other is hjkl1234.exe
