Taskbar Icon Popup - Windows Security Center has detected spyware

The background image of my computer has been turned into a black screen that says "Your computer is in danger! Windows Security Center has detected spyware/malware. It is strongly recommended that you use antispyware tools to prevent data loss." Also, a red circular taskbar icon with an X thru the center has appeared, displaying the same message.

I ran an online virus scan through Yahoo, which detected no problems. I also ran Spybot, which detected no problems.

Once it is gone you will want to look at each of those items, if you have sensitive passwords for credit cards or banking, take action to stop them from being used until you can secure the accounts.

Let's try Stinger first: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Down Stinger and follow the directions at that link. Let me know if it locates and remove the trojan.
We will also cover it again manually, so if Stinger remove it, it won't be there for the manual removal.

Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how things went and how the computer is running now.

Let's check for the Smitfraud trojan, follow these instructions:
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

pskelley responded to the Taskbar Icon Popup, and I'll post the HJT and SmitfraudFix report at the end of this message.

Just so it's not overlooked, as it seems it could be with two separate cases in the same thread, the post titled "Problem with Popups" still needs to be reviewed.

After following pskelley's instructions, the circular red taskbar icon has disappeared. However, the desktop background is still locked as the black background with the "Your computer is in danger." message.

I am interested in rather Singer had any effect on that worm, if you can recall, please post that information.

Your HJT log appear clean of malware and you did indeed have Smitfraud: C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html FOUND ! and that normally returns the Desktop? Let's try a few others ways to fix the Desktop, but first I want to post this information since your HJT log is clean.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I also notice Java has updated again to jre1.5.0_07 since some real nasties have been accessing computers through out of date Java, you may want to update asap.

Before we run additional tools, let's try to return the Desktop with these methods:

(1)
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display, click the Desktop tab, and then click Customize Desktop.
3. Select Restore Defaults

Right-click on the desktop
Click on the Properties item
When the Properties dialog comes up click on the Web tab
If Show Web content on my Active Desktop is checked then click on the page in the box below and click the Delete button
Uncheck the checkbox in front of Show Web content on my Active Desktop
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button

I'm not sure if Stinger had any effect on the problem. The report included a number of files it scanned, but said nothing about any files it found that were infected or cleaned. I'm not sure if that's because none were found, or if the program's report isn't meant to display that information.

As far as my desktop, I wasn't sure if you wanted me to run clean with SmitfraudFix, but after your most recent post I assumed you did. So I ran it, and the desktop is fine now.

It looks like everything is clean now. Thanks a lot for your help.
