This may shed some light on it, you may have a message with a bad attachment. You may want to empty all your sent , deleted and received messages except the ones that you really need to keep.

Then run ESET again and see if it still picks that one up

    Thumbs up S&D Scan successful

I deleted the one e-mail that was in that Outlook folder. It was a fake non-deliverable notice from 2006 advertising a pharmacy. I'll run ESET again as you wrote.

I re-enabled Spybot S&D Teatimer and ran a scan. No Immediate threats were found - no Virtumonde.

Strangely Spybot runs on system startup and does a scan even though I do not have that option selected in Settings. I have to exit it to proceed to Windows.

    Thanks,
    Steve

It was a fake non-deliverable notice from 2006 advertising a pharmacy <--I was suspecting something like this, glad you found it

Lets update your Java to make your system more secure

Download the latest version Here save it, do not install it yet.

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 16 <--The wording is confusing but this is what you need

    • Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java
    • Reboot your computer
    • Install the latest version

You can verify the installation Here

Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Windows Updates and download and install all critical updates including Internet Explorer 8.

How are things running now ?
