    Hi again,

Well, the Kaspersky Online Scanner finally finished and here is the report:

    C:\Users\Oscar\Documents\Files (Documents, Information, and Manuals)\Software, Updates, & Utilities\Housekeeping & Maintenance Utilities\produkey.zip Infected: not-a-virus:PSWTool.Win32.ProductKey.i 1

    Selected area has been scanned.

As you can see, there were three infected files, and two were in IE temporary folders that I thought were deleted using the ATF Cleaner. Maybe they weren't deleted because it is an older version of IE. Please advise how I should handle these infected files?

Also, here is the DDS.txt log, which I ran immediately afterwards:

    ============= FINISH: 11:47:57.60 ===============

And here is the best news. I ran a couple of searches in Internet Explorer, using Google, and I did not get any bad links from the search results.

I remain cautious though, because before, it would be fine at the beginning, and then start giving me the bad links.

I will look for Acrobat version 7.1.4 and install it.

Again, thanks for your tireless effort in helping me resolve this issue!

    Hi,

    Show hidden files (Vista)
    -----------------
    1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
    2. Click the View tab.
    3. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

    Delete these files if found:
    C:\Users\Oscar\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\FSZPI0SK\searchresults_ron[1].htm
    C:\Users\Oscar\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\HNUG6XBF\PZN3WUIEGb3XMmeUvoGp1pEr33Xy[1].htm

Adobe Acrobat update can be downloaded here. Before you can install 7.1.4 there have to be updates 7.1.0 and 7.1.3 installed.

Let me know when that's been done

    Thumbs up

    Hi,

I updated Acrobat to version 7.1.4, but I only had to update version 7.1.3 before, since I was at version 7.1.0 before.

Something funny seems to happen though after the update, because I checked for updates in the program, and it lists version 7.1.0, when I am running 7.1.4. Of course, I chose not to install this update. I imagine that I will manually need to install updates in the future, instead of using the feature inside of Acrobat.

I was able to delete those files, but Microsoft does a real good job hiding these subdirectories. I had to view the hidden files, but also deselect "Hide Protected Operating System Files (Recommended)" to find the Temporary Internet Files Folder. Even with all those selections, Windows did not show the remaining subdirectories, but I was able to access them by entering the entire path in Windows Explorer. Both files were deleted and I emptied the Recycle Bin.

I have another question. Now, when I access my iGoogle homepage, I get the following popup warning:

You are about to leave a secure Internet connection. It will be possible for others to view information you send.

And then it asks me if I want to continue and if I want this warning in the future.

Is this normal, and should I disable future warnings?

I also have not re-enabled my virus scanner and other security software. Should I do this already?

And finally, it seems to me that we are getting near the finish line, and when we are done, would you recommend what security applications I should run and at what frequency should I scan. I am currently due to upgrade my virus scanner, and am looking at BitDefender and Kaspersky. I have Trend Micro, but it does not seem too reliable. What would you recommend?

    Thanks a million!!!

    Hi,

Yes, that warning is normal. You may re-enable protection too

    Good free antivirus programs are:
    Antivir and
    Avast!

    Good commercial ones are from:
    Kaspersky and
    ESET

    THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

    Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

A To disable the System Restore feature:

    1. Click on the Start button.
    2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
    3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
    4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
    5. Click on the System Protection tab.
    6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
    7. Press OK.

    B. Reboot.

    C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    1. Double-click My Computer.
    2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
    5. Under the
      Hidden files
      folder, select
      Show hidden files and folders.
    6. Check
      Hide protected operating system files.
    7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC and save it to desktop.
    • Double-click OTC.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • Select Yes when the
      Begin cleanup Process?
      prompt appears.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

    UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

    • hosts file:
      • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
      • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
      • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
      • However, it can slow down certain computers.
      • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!

Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
      1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
      2. Click run
      3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
      4. hit enter, then locate dns client
      5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
      6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
      7. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

    Have a great day,

Well, everything seems to be working OK up to now.

I did the last steps as instructed, and windows is completely updated. The only remaining update is marked "important" and it is to upgrade from IE7 to IE8. Before doing this again, I wanted to ask for your recommendation. Should I update to IE8, or would you recommend another browser altogether?

I also have not modified the hosts file yet per your instructions, as Spybot had already made a bunch of entries for malware sites. Should I combine these with the entries in the hosts file you recommended, or should I just use the your recommendations?

Again, thank you so much for your excellent help in resolving this issue!!!

I recommend to upgrade to IE8. It's advisable to have latest version even if some other browser was your main one.

I also have not modified the hosts file yet per your instructions, as Spybot had already made a bunch of entries for malware sites. Should I combine these with the entries in the hosts file you recommended, or should I just use the your recommendations?
Better use only one. Both are good ones so you can choose to change or stick with the present one
