    Question Spybot and Norton

    Hello,

I just found the following thread in the Norton Community forum, and I would like to get your reaction, thoughts, comments:

    http://community.norton.com/t5/Norto...ea/td-p/222755

Is this deliberate propaganda, misinformed opining -- or distressing truth?

I've been using Spybot (with TeaTimer enabled) and Norton 360 together for some time now. I'd always thought they worked together well, as each of them (supposedly) did something that the other one didn't. But if Spybot and N360 are hindering each other's action, rather than complementing one another, I sure want to know ASAP!!!

Thank you. Replies with details and explanations will be the most welcome!

Well most virus protection applications will tell you that they will not function correctly with other anti virus software installed, so it is probably just them re-iterating this.
I personally ignore all of those messages and have many software packages installed on my computers that according to the software will interfere with each other, but i have not seen this occur to date.

    Thanks for the links, Tashi!

I'm interested in this topic because I use both NIS and SSD. In fact I've had NIS on my Windows 98 PC since 2003 or so, and Spybot since about 2004. For four years they seemed to work well together, but ever since the first half of '08, I can no longer finish a Spybot manual scan -- it always crashes at the end with an "invalid page fault" error.

Extensive diagnostics conducted through another forum now suggest that NIS might actually be the problem, in particular due to the file ASOEHOOK.DLL. I'm thinking of either deleting that file to see what happens, or uninstalling NIS completely and using another AV application to supplement Spybot.

Anyway, it looks like the war between Symantec and Spybot continues. What a shame.

    Rogers,

    That's reassuring, good to know.

I did the same thing (ignore all the dire warnings about incompatibilities) and everything seemed to work O.K. till about two years ago, when Spybot scans started crashing with an error message. Wonder if the warnings could be true after all.
