The system is running much better, so I did not do any of the above except run RSIT. It seems like the system starts acting up when I have to turn it off. I usually leave it on all of the time.

    Here is the RSIT log:

    Hi

    TFC (Temp File Cleaner):

    • Please download TFC to your desktop,
    • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
    • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
    • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
    • If prompted, click Yes to reboot. If not prompted, then please reboot manually.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. You may not be prompted to reboot.

    Disable Microsoft Security Essentials

    • Open MSE and go to Settings > Real Time Protection.
    • Then uncheck "Turn on real time protection".
    • Exit MSE when done.

    ESET online scanner

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: This scan can last for hours.

    • Hold down Control then click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner
    • Then click on:
    • If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
    • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on:
    • When/If prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
    • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
    • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
    • Now click on:
    • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this might take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
    • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
    • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
    • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, but make sure you post the logfile first!
    • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
    • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
    • Now click on: in the ESET window.

    RootRepeal

    Please download RootRepeal from here.
    • # close all other programs then run it by double-clicking on the file named RootRepeal.exe
    • Click the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
    • Click the Scan button
    • In the Select Scan dialog, check:
      • Drivers
        Processes
        Files
        Stealth Code
        Hidden Services
        SSDT
        Shadow SSDT
        Callbacks
    • Click the OK button
    • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
    • Click OK to start the scan.

Note: The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running

    • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
    • Click this button and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
    • Go to File then Exit to close the program
    • Post the log in your next reply.

Now there's a chance this scan will crash, then Restart RootRepeal, click the Drivers tab, then click Scan. When it's finished click Save Report and post the log. Repeat for the other tabs (Processes though to Callbacks). One or more of the scans will crash, then restart RootRepeal and move on to the next tab.

Please enable Microsoft Security Essentials when the above scans has finished.

    RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

    • Click Start then Run
    • Copy/paste the following line into the run box & click OK:
      "%userprofile%\desktop\rsit.exe" /info
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open, log.txt <<will be maximized and info.txt <<will be minimized
    • Copy & paste the contents of both logs in your next reply.

    Is PC-Doctor installed?

Look for it here and tell me if it's there or not (do not start the program):
Start -> All Programs -> PC Help & Tools
    or
Start -> All Programs -> Hewlett-Packard -> HP Pavilion PC Tools

    Please post:
    -The ESET log
    -The RootRepeal log(s)
    -The RSIT logs.
    -PC-Doctor?
-Update me on the performance of the computer.

    Uninstall Ask Toolbar

Click Start > Run, then copy and paste the following line into the run box and press Enter:
    MsiExec.exe /X{86D4B82A-ABED-442A-BE86-96357B70F4FE}

Close all browsers and complete the uninstall wizard. Read the text carefully to successfully uninstall the toolbar. Verify that the toolbar now has disappeared from the internet browser.

    Upload File for testing

Please go to jotti.org or Virustotal

Copy/paste the following line into the white box at the top:
    C:\Downloads\CookingDash.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing, rescan the file if asked.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the permalink (web address) in your next response.
    Example of web address :

    Diagnose with PC-Doctor

    Start PC_Doctor by clicking:
Start -> All Programs -> PC Help & Tools
    or
Start -> All Programs -> Hewlett-Packard -> HP Pavilion PC Tools

Click Motherboard Test under Test Scripts on the left menu. The program should now perform various tests of the system (this might take a while). Please do not use the computer while the tests are running. Make a note of any components with description of any failed test (if any).

When the Motherboard tests are finished go back to the main screen of PC-Doctor and click Storage in the left menu. Now double-click the icon for your hard drive and perform a short test. Again do not use the computer while the tests are running. Make a note of the description of any failed test (if any).

    Please post:
-The link to the Jotti/Virustotal scan.
-Details of any failed PC-Doctor tests.
-Tell me if you have run (or not run) the program CookingDash.exe on the computer (don't do it).

I followed your instructions to remove the Ask toolbar, and browsing seems to be much quicker.

I was unable to upload the file for testing. Jotti's replied that "No file uploaded." Virustotal said that file exceeded maximum 20mb size.

I ran the PC-Doctor and received no errors.

Have you run this file on your computer?

    Uninstall ComboFix

Click on Start >> Run..., copy and paste the following line into the run box, then click OK:
    ComboFix /Uninstall
Note: there's a space between "ComboFix" and "/Uninstall" and that this is the correct method to uninstall Combofix even if it is named differently.

    Delete the following tools

TFC is a great tool for you to keep and use on a regular basis or you can delete it and use the installed CCleaner instead. Please delete the following tools (if still present):

    dds.scr
    MGADiag.exe
    SecurityCheck.exe
    Gmer.exe
    RSIT.exe
    RootRepeal.exe

    Java

Go to Add/Remove programs in ControlPanel and uninstall:
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 23.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop, you can delete the downloaded and unzipped files after running the tool as described below.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

    • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
    • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
    • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
    • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
    • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location. (No need to post if no error.)

Download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24 (~15Mb)

I have never run this file on my computer. Is there any way to remove it?

I completed all of your instructions above and install the new JRE.

    Thank you!

I'm not yet sure if the detection of this file is a false positive or not. Do you know what this file is and where it was downloaded from?

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :file
      C:\Downloads\CookingDash.exe
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

There is also another file in the download directory called FashionDash.exe. It was downloaded the same day, but I am not sure who would have downloaded them.
