Default Problems with Firefox, Chrome, Mass Emails, And All that...

    Hello

Let me explain my situation with the hopes you will be able to assist me.

While on vacation last week, my computer was consistently on (running Teamviewer so I could access it from wherever I am if needed). During the week, the computer apparently sent out spam emails which to me indicated a virus and/or keylogger was present on my system. I changed all passwords, and that part is taken care because I have not entered into anything of importance from this computer.

I came back home, ran several antiviruses, most of them did detect viruses, but every time i re-ran it, there was different variations or different viruses. I then proceeded to uninstall my old antivirus (Panda Cloud) and installed MSE.

For a long while, MSE refused to update. So I disabled it for the time being.

While this was ongoing, I noticed that Firefox (I updated to FF4) started opening tabs on its own, using my pages information to exhibit search pages without my authorization. Late last night a new twist appeared. Once in a while, FF would spawn a new tab, which will cause the screen to glitch and throw an BSOD error. That has happened twice in the last 12 hours. That, I did NOT like. So I switched to Chrome to use that, and noticed that it refused to run any page (including its settings page). So Chrome was a no-go.

I uninstalled Firefox, deleted all its data in the appdata folder, then reinstalled it. Popup tabs is still a problem even with only Adblock Plus installed.

For the record I have ran:

    -Panda Cloud Free (uninstalled)
    -Spybot S&D
    -MalwarByte
    -SuperAntiSpyware
    -Avast! Free
    -MSE <- Disabled ATM
    -Immunet Protect <-Disabled ATM
    -ESET Online Scanner (In Progress)

and the reason MSE and Immunet Protect is disabled is that I am currently scanning with ESET Online Scanner. Every time I reboot because they would be fixing it, there are still more viruses/threats and the inital problem still remains.

With Avast Free, It spotted an MBR virus/rootkit, but said I had to pay for that portion to remove it. Im hoping ESET would do the job. Upon following instructions set forth in your FAQ:

    1) Backed up Registry with ERUNT
    2) DDS Log posted below (I notice an MBR infection at the end)
    3) Attached the Attach.txt
    4) Will post result of Spybot when I m done with ESET (Im really frustrated and trying to solve everything at once).
    5) Subscribed to this thread

Also: Vuze is installed on the computer due to the fact I use Linux distros, and downloaded the shareware directly from their site. If asked to remove, I will comply. Just acknowledging the P2P possiblity here at the beginning.

This is the following list of viruses found:

    ESET Online (In progress):
    5 Found
    win32/Bagel.gen.zip worm (3)
    win32/Toolbar.Zugo Application
    win32/Adware.WBug.A Application

    Immunet:

    No Threats Found

    Avast Free:

MBR: \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0 (says this is a hidden rootkit, no further info). Repaired at next boot up (MBR Scan shows nothing)
Win32:Inject-AFK [TRJ] -- moved to chest

    SUPERantispyware:

too many tracking cookies to list, but listing only trojans listed in their quarantine:
    Trojan.Agent/GenFakeDrop (7 listed)
    Trojan.Agent/Gen-FSG (1 Listed)
    Adware.Accoona (1 Listed)
    Malware.Trace (2 listed)

    MSE:

    PowerRegScheduler
    QuickLinks
    Openstream.C
    ClassLoader

Hopefully this would help us work on my problem. Ive usually kept myself clean, and this is the first (and worst) virus attack Ive experienced on my own personal computer-- have assisted in fixing others.

    Thank you.

    hi,

    I changed all passwords,
Your machine is still compromised, wont do any good to change them.

Based on the log your machine has a rootkit. I would use the machine as little as possible and it shouldnt have any connectivity. If your not sure how to stop this then I would just power it off.

You have a rootkit on your machine. They hide malicious files and components from traditional antivirus/antimalware software. Rootkits bury themselves deep in the operating system. Special software is needed to detect and remove them. Even if symptoms are gone and logs are clean its still not a 100% guarantee that your machine is clean once a rootkit has been detected and removed. You should consider a complete reformat/reinstall of Windows as an option.

The best source for information on how to do this would be the computer manufacturers website.

To manually clean up the computer with current utilities proceed as follows:

We will get two downloads to use:

Not sure if this first one will run on W7 but we will find out:

    1) Download aswMBR to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
Click the "Scan" button to start scan
On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

    2) Combofix requires that you read a guide first before using it. Read through the guide then apply the directions on the compromised machine. Post the log in your reply.
