Trying to fix a toshiba satellite laptop w/Vista home basic OS. (my Daughter's).
Specifically PC POwer Speed 1.0.0.21 a known trojan, also lots of spyware and malware found. cleaned w/Malwarebytes Antimalware then Spybot S&D, CCleaner, finally was able to install AVG 2012 and regained a little bit of control.
Still I have some directories "corrupted" i.e. C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates shows an error message stating the directory is not accessible "file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" .
This prevents me to install Vista SP1 which is a requisite for installing SP2.
The Windows update history shows:
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.71.833.0)
Installation date: 12/15/2009 10:20 AM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070670
And it's been failing ever since!!!!
I can't run chkdsk at startup no matter I tried many ways to do so, safe mode etc, checking register. no solution yet.
Also I can't either find the file autochk.exe used for running the chkdsk at startup.
Now I am resourcing to Hijackthis as my lst resource, otherwise I will need to format and reload the Vista which I am not que sure how to do since the Laptop came with Windows pre-installed and I don't have a backup DVD
