    Default svchost.exe resources

I keep getting a program/service that launches svchost.exe. this file climbs up the usage meter until it takes over all of my resources, causes the video driver to restart, and then the blue screen of death. I have updated my spybot definitions a dozen times, re-run a full scan and nothing is found. I'm almost to the point where I can't use my computer for more than 10 minutes unless i have my task manager open and end the process over, and over. I've had to end it twice writing this message. Please help me!

    Hello,

    svchost.exe is no malware.
It is a legitimate Windows file.
svchost.exe is an integral part of Windows OS. It cannot be stopped or restarted manually. This process manages system services that run from dynamic link libraries (files with extension .dll). Examples for such system services are: "Automatic Updates", "Windows Firewall", "Plug and Play", "Fax Service", "Windows Themes" and many more.
At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry and constructs a list of services that it needs to load. Under normal conditions, multiple instances of Svchost.exe will be running simultaneously. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that many services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging.
If the process svchost.exe uses high cpu resources, it is mostly due because the service "Automatic Updates" is downloading some new Windows update.

    Best regards

i understand the function of svchost program as part of the OS. But, I have a program that is causing svchost to start and then increase at a rapid rate the amount of resources its using, in excess of 700,000kb. Eventually it will crash my computer. When i go to the service that is being run by it (right click svchost and then chose go to service) nothing is highlighted. So i can not identify which service is running it. Other research has told me that there is a virus that is doing this but Spybot is not finding it.

    Hello itsjomo,

Which version of Spybot-S&D are you running?

    Please list,

    • The operating system.
    • Other security programs installed, for example an anti virus program.
    • When the issue started. Was there a specific "event" you remember?

    Best regards.

It won't. Run your A/V program. And hit Sysinternals.com. Process Explorer may help identify the culprit. Also try nirsoft.com. Lots of useful tools both sites.
