Re ViStart....... it appears OTL removed ViStart completely, as I can't find any remaining trace of the program.

System Sounds are definitely turned off as per your previous message. I did double check again.

And no I wouldn't know where to start with any major hardware change!!

Hi gpkenny,

Let's check the hard drive for errors:

1. Chkdsk in Vista/7/8

You must run the command prompt as an administrator or in an "elevated mode".

• Start menu, in the search bar type "cmd"
• Right-click the cmd icon, select "run as administrator"
  
  • If you have user account control (UAC) set up it may prompt you to accept that action.
• Then type in "chkdsk /r" (make note of the space between chkdsk and /)

Hi OCD,

I attempted to run chkdsk /r, however the scan and repair, upon reboot became stuck at 27 per cent, for over two hours. I've read a couple of articles by other people complaining about chkdsk 'sticking' on 27 per cent on windows 8. I rebooted again and took the option to skip scan.

Is there a faster way to run chkdsk /r, at the current speed the scan would last many hours.

How do I cancel the program to avoiding the scan loading again when I next reboot?

Ive read on the microsoft forum chk/dsk /r does get stuck on 27 per cent and this is normal and thr program will complete in 3/4 hours. Ill run it again overnight.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I have been waiting on some advice from a colleague.

A suggestion is, you have Rockstar Games installed and this may not be shutting down completely after you exit a game. You might try either uninstalling it or seeing if you can mute the sound settings within the program.

Secondly, you use Skype, this may also be the case. Try muting the sound setting here also and see if that helps.

Let me know the results of the chkdsk and the other steps when you have completed them.
