    Default Windows Media SDK

    8 July 2013

    Platform: Win 7 Home SP1
Spybot 2.0.12.173 (with the last update and immunization performed July 7, 2013)

Each time I run Spybot, it returns the following four items:

Windows.OpenWith: [SBI $F7204896] Open with list - .AVI extension (Registry Key, nothing done) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1737011311-1778037422-1816192952-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.AVI\OpenWithList

Windows Media SDK: [SBI $37AAEDE6] Computer name (Registry Change, nothing done) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1737011311-1778037422-1816192952-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows Media\WMSDK\General\ComputerName

Windows Media SDK: [SBI $CAA58B6E] Unique ID (Registry Change, nothing done) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1737011311-1778037422-1816192952-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows Media\WMSDK\General\UniqueID

Windows Media SDK: [SBI $BACCD0DA] Volume serial number (Registry Value, nothing done) HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1737011311-1778037422-1816192952-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows Media\WMSDK\General\VolumeSerialNumber

The first result appears to relate to a program called Windows Media Classic Home Cinema (mpc-hc.exe). I have that program set to play all my media in lieu of Windows Media Player. I thought that this registry entry just directs the computer to use mpc-hc.exe to run an AVI file. Why does Spybot indicate that this is a problem? (I have Spybot fix the issue, but it reappears the next time I run Spybot.)

Numbers 2, 3, and 4 appear to relate to Windows Media Player Software Development Kit. I am not a software developer and I don't think I ever intentionally used this program. I have the three items under "Media Features" unchecked in the control panel's "Turn Windows Features on or off". (Windows Media Player is there and unchecked but the SDK is not there at all.) I also reviewed the Control Panel's "Uninstall or Change a Program" and I do not see Windows Media Player or any entry that says "SDK" or "software development kit" listed. I have Spybot fix the three issues, but they all reappear the next time I run Spybot. What do I need to do to permanently resolve these three recurring issues?

Thank you in advance for your help!!

    Hi,

which Version of Spybot are you unsing - the free or the home/professional Version?
If Home or Professional, do you have the Live-Protection running?

Which Version of the Windows Media SDK do you run and why you use the SDK at all and not only the Media-Player?
Is your Windows and the SDK officially licenced?
