Default SpyBot S&D Install hung up

    Hi
I have just downloaded the free install version of SpyBot S&D to see if it can find and remove MySearchDial that my PC has been infected with.

If it can then I will upgrade but I am majorly concernd about all these so called spyware removal tools that are nothing more than spyware!!!!

I have used SpyBot S&D on another PC several years ago so thought I would give it another go seeing as there seems to be this Forum and SpyBot S&D is not listed on Spyware Warrior as spyware itself.

However, when I run the installer it has hung up on the System Services - Installing selelcted system services: Creating Scheduled Tasks screen with the progress bar about 60% across

I have checked in task manager and it says that the task is still running very occasionally but I cannot move the window or anything.

Obviously this is not a good start .......

Any advice would be greatly appreciated a MySearchDial is really driving me nuts!

Correct, Spybot - Search & Destroy was recommended software.
Those who have followed the development of this page since 2004 will have noted that the list of "rogue/suspect" anti-spyware products has not been updated since May 2007

Six + years but it is a nice historical archive.

    Hi,
    Answers as follows:
    Personal computer
    Windows 7 SP1
Avast Free anti-virus but I disabled this. Furthermore I tried to do a re-install of SpyBot S&D and it asked me if I wanted to uninstall the previous version, ie the one that got stuck half way through install, and then the uninstall also hung up! When the install and uninstall hangs up I cannot move the dialog window.

This is a fairly new computer computer (3 months) and was virus/spyware free until this nasty little MySearchDial got in. The only thing I had noticed was that PowerPoint would not run an MP4 video which is when I downloaded a codec pack for Media Player which is when I picked up the MySearchDial spyware, I'm pretty sure!

    Appreciate your help.

    Hi iandh2010,

Bundled software is a common cause of browser hijackers.

If you'd like someone to take a look at the system they can see if anything else needs removing.

In that case please start a topic in the Malware Removal Forum and a volunteer analyst will advise when available.

First see that forum's FAQ which also includes instructions in post #2 on how to provide DDS and aswMBR logs, which are used in the preliminary analysis.

    Thanks Tashi,
I have just taken a look at the instructions in the Malware Removal Forum and they talk about running ERUNT but it would appear to not support Windows 7 & 8?
