v1.6.2.46 won't access downloads

I've been trying to update my Spybot S&D definitions for the last few days, but every time I click on Update, it pauses for a quick second and a warning window pops-up "Please select some update files from the list first." I click on 'Okay', another window pops open for a split second and closes. No matter how many times I do this, the same result occurs.

I understand there is a 2.2 version, but I have been hearing that it is riddled with problems. I like how 1.6 is working, but I hate to think that I am not getting up to date definitions that will protect my machine.

Any thoughts on this matter on why this is happening?

There was a beta SDUpdate.exe released some years back to fix the "Please select some update files from the list first." error in Spybot 1.6.2.I believe it is still used to fix it:

Note the instructions for unzipping the file listed under the description.

I've had Spybot 2.0 to 2.2 for the past year or so with no significant problems that I can recall.
There's a compatibility list here:

But Spybot 1.6.2 is also still supported,so it's up to you.
