50+ message windows with failed message during update

I just renewed on a laptop that hasnt' been run for a couple of months. Win10.
Tried to do an update and it generated some 50+ windows with an execution error. After clearing them all i exited and restarted. The tried to update again and was told the update service was off ...
Started it and trying to do another update .. as scan didnt work because many definitions were not updated.

What causes this .. how to keep it from happening. Is this a known issue?
