Lets do this while where waiting to rule out if Spybot is responsible for the hosts file backup

Right click on the Windows Logo on the bottom left of your taskbar and select Programs and Features, look for Spybot and uninstall it. Its causing you problems right now and we can reinstall it when we are done
After you uninstall it , reboot your system

Then run this fix

Open notepad , Go to Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Notepad.
Please copy the entire contents Inside of the code box below beginning with START and ending with END
(To do this highlight the contents of the box, right click on it and select copy. Right-click in the open notepad and select Paste).
Name the file Fixlist, Save it to your desktop where you have FRST/FRST64 or the fix wont work, . Then open up FRST/FRST64 by Right Clicking on it and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, then click on FIX (Not Scan) It won't take long, after your computer reboots you will find a FIXLOG.TXT on your desktop, post it please

hope this helps - installed spybot first then did scans already posted, Thanks do you ever get a day off?? Not that I'm complaining - so do appreciate the help!

I have been at this since the days of Windows 98. All us helpers are just volunteers, we dont work for Spybot. I am a member of about dozen or so Malware Removal forums but just active on this one and two others, not enough time in the day. Its just a hobby, do this when I have the time.

Looks like uninstalling Spybot did the trick, that host file entry did not come back

You can go ahead and reinstall Spybot, but do not use there hosts file tool, your host file is fine just the way it is with the Microsoft default host file.

https://www.safer-networking.org/dl/

How is your system behaving now, any issues you feel maybe malware related ??

WOW I'm even more impressed with all the work you've done as a volunteer! I'll reinstall spybot & let you know how things are going by tomorrow night, if that's OK (or sooner if there is a problem) Really can't thank you enough for all your work & dilengence getting me straightened out.

duh me - how do I install not using spybot hosts? Went to install & even though it found my license for paid version it gave me free version - I can certainly UNinstall it again and wait for your directions. It did find my license(s) so that's not a problem & believe even though it loads free version I have to install over it for Windows 10. Just don't want this messing me up again, so I'm going to uninstall spybot till I hear back from you. Thanks Ken

Good Morning Corrine

I heard back from the Spybot people and also some from another forum and Spybot does indeed create those hosts file backups, so that's good to know that Malware is not creating them.

Post here in the Spybot forum , they can help you reinstall Spybot and get it back up and running

Ken - reinstalled spybot, they found my license & hit reinstall post Windows 10 "fix" they have, but it cannot download a ton of anti-virus updates - tried twice & I did go thru your link have not tried to scan, since it's not able to update archive files - or do I need to take this to another forum? Just hoping my computer is clean - how do I know? Thanks again & I promise you will be done with me someday soon!

I'm back

Ken - did post in forum 2 days ago & just now went to support @spybot & believe there is overall problem with my program kept getting scrip error on each step of the way giving them message. For ha-ha's I went to my event viewer & found errors in past 3 days in security log 1 is system files distributed com server local host; other is sync host 8d91dof - this I believe when I tried to upgrade spybot as fits time frame, another kernel power & NPT client. Just wondering if there is anything I can run while I'm waiting to hear back from spybot to see if I'm infected again (or still?) Sorry to bother you again, but trying to be viligant. Thank you!

sorry sent twice - first time said there was an error & wait 30 secs so thought it didn't go thru - the 2nd time it told me it was duplicate.

You can try this free online virus scanner

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the
    esetOnline.png
    button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on
      esetSmartInstall.png
to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the
      esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
      icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
    esetAcceptTerms.png
  5. Click the
    esetStart.png
    button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
    esetScanArchives.png
  8. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked
  9. Push the Start button.
  10. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  11. When the scan completes, push
    esetListThreats.png
  12. Push
    esetExport.png
, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as
ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  13. Push the
    esetBack.png
    button.
  14. Push
    esetFinish.png
Please make sure you include the following items in your next post:
The log that was produced after running ESET Online Scanner.

Does this mean I unstall spybot again before I use this eset scanner? I did write spybot directly for help & they gave me instructions on how to update & it worked. Going to run a scan now from spybot & will wait till I hear from you about what to disable before doing eset - does this mean Malware Bytes also? Thanks Ken.

spybot scan results

As noted in last reply I did run spybot & it found adware threats - I saved the log (below) & when I went to fix problems I just got the swirling ball - so after 10 mins. of that went to close it & said that it was not finished - it never fixed problems & said malware program not responding. Don't know if this is any use to you but here it is:

Nothing to worry about Corrine, 7 of those files are in your Recycle Bin and the other 7 are backups of what AdwCleaner removed.

1. Right click on your Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin

2. Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again.
  • Click on the Uninstall button.
  • Click Yes when asked are you sure you want to uninstall.
  • Both AdwCleaner.exe, its folder and all logs will be removed.

3. Did you empty out your Downloads folder like I previously posted ??
