Wondows Update Theroy

I have seen programs such as “Spybot Search and Destroy” and “Avast! Antivirus” run in a fine line shell just outside of windows, now I am far from being a programmer but it seems to me that these programs run just before windows loads up explorer.exe (at very least just before welcome screen (login.ui)). I was wondering if it is at all possible for windows updates to run in this area? My theory being that all windows updates could be then applied without need for several restarts. What do you think?
