Default counters.dat file will not shred

Hello. I always use the shred tool. One file that "could not be shredded" is counters.dat My question is, should I be concerned about this? Thank you very much for your reply.

    Hello pollyjeanne,

As a search on counters.dat provides inconclusive information it might be best if you start a topic at the Microsoft Answers Forum.

    Hi tashi,
Well, actually no help there as it seems to confound users who want to delete it, with no information of exactly what the file is or does, but suspicion lurks. Some say it gets loaded with an upgrade to IE10...but I am on Windows XP and have never used IE nor upgraded. I shred files with Spybot before I do a system scan, and this file suddenly appeared in the last couple of days, which is a new experience for me as I have never thus far had a file that will not shred. I recently upgraded from the regular Spybot to the Pro Edition and am having problems with the actual system scan which just continues to loop, gives inaccurate information about when my last scan was, etc. I will look on other threads to see what I can learn about this. Cheers!

You are probably aware that XP reached end of support back in April 2014 and so the operating system does not receive updates from Microsoft to patch vulnerabilities.

Do you have a service pack installed? There were three, SP1, SP2 and SP3.

Sorry to hear that, does the scan actually loop or freeze?

    Best regards.

Hi again and thanks for inquiring. The scan seems to run through to 100% and then begins again at 0% and goes to about 4.6% and the percent does not change from there. However the scan does seem to eventually complete after a long time. I thought at first it was maybe just looping, but it does go through. I found something today in the event manager with an error that has to do with Spybot. I have not tried to open or use Spybot today.

Is this anything to worry about?

    Hi pollyjeanne,

In case it helps: What can I do if Spybot – Search & Destroy freezes during the scan?

There is a topic in the forum from 2014 discussing Error 7000.

Also, please feel free to open a support ticket here. They may have a bigger database about errors than a search in the forums.

    Best regards.
