how to update

Sorry for the trivial question and if it already been answered but it's not clear for me how to update S&D manually?! I'm using portable version and didn't install update service, running update manually from Start Center. Should I press "update" button only once or keep pressing until the button becomes unclickable?

That's Spybot Portable from Portableapps? Do you have the Portable Apps Suite, or did you download Spybot Portable as a standalone app? I was looking through some tutorials on their page, though I'm not that familiar with it.

You would press the Update button in the Spybot Start Center and the Update window should appear. You'd click update and the button should become greyed out, and then below that you should see Checking for antispyware updates....,and it will show you the progress of that until it is done. Is yours not doing that? I'll uninstall the Spybot update service, reboot, and see what happens when I try updating.

It checked for updates okay when I ran Spybot as admin with the Update service uninstalled. When I didn't run as admin and clicked update it asked me if I wanted to elevate to start the background update service. If I do elevate, it checks for updates okay. When I don't elevate, I get "Unable to store downloaded update information to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Spybot - Search & Destroy 2\Updates\Downloads\updates.uid"!" in the info box below the Checking for Antispyware Updates....info box.

I'm not sure if it temporarily installs the update service when it's uninstalled or not, I looked in Services.msc and didn't see it there, but I might not have refreshed the page quick enough.

So I'll just leave this here for info so I won't forget it until I hear back from you.

Yes, it's downloaded as a standalone app from Portableapps. So, I need to press "update" button several times, correct? to make it to fully update definitions. Mine is doing like this: I press the update, it quickly in a seconds downloads some signatures, then update button is available again, so I press it again and it downloads again and so on...Well, on a fresh download and install I had to press it only 3-4 times and then "update" greyed out, but if I use the program long time, then to press requirement increases several times until it becomes greyed, so it's bothersome...

No, you shouldn't need to press the Update button several times to get Spybot to update fully. Usually you only need to press the Update once, and all the updates would download. If you click the Update button and there are no Updates available to be downloaded, it will retrieve an update info file, and the Update button will become available again within seconds, but that doesn't sound like what is happening with yours, since the Update button does become greyed out after awhile and it is downloading updates. Would you please post your updates logfile so I can look at it? Open Spybot Start Center, click Update, then when the Update window opens over to the left press Show Update log, go to Edit, Select All, then rightclick within the logfile and select Copy, then Paste it here. If it's too large to post here, just try breaking it up into sections.

I suspected to require several pressing because it does update very fast and I was thinking that it doesn't download all the new signatures, also comparing to EEK which needs almost 30 min. to update, made me doubtful.

Not to worry, your logfile looks good. You had quite a few updates download on the 23rd, I'd assume that's the day you downloaded Spybot Portable.
After that, it was Spybot downloading the info file. These ones:

That is what happens when you check for updates and there are no updates available. Spybot downloads an update info file so it can tell if updates are needed or not.

For what purpose does SDWelcome.exe need to connect to internet? It's clear that SDUpdate.exe needs to connect to download updates but SDWelcome?!
