    Default WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 Fallout

    Hi

I recently got infected by Winfixer Pro 2006. I removed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run file which appeared equivalent to the WinFixer 2005 WFX5.exe entry Norton described in their which seemed to kill the pop ups. I run Norton Internet Security but it seemed unable to deal with the problem. After running Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 and AdAware scans a number of problems were removed but Norton kept periodically popping up to say WinFixer was the machine and identified 3 files. I've since removed these but don't have alot of confidence that the problem has been fully dealt with.

I was wondering if someone can give me some direction to make sure my system is OK again?

    Thanks

    Meg

Welcome to the forum. Let me first make sure you are aware that the version of Spybot S&D you should be running is 1.4. You need to update as soon as possible, make sure you have the latest updates and are fully immunized. Then run a scan and remove what is located. Do the same with Ad-aware if it is not currectly updated as of 10/18/06 updates.

Popups from the rouge spyware program Winfixer usually indicates the presence of the Vundo trojan, but I do not see it in the log. I do however, see a badly out of date Java program, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2 which as you can see is one way Vundo infect you.
I would get that program updated right away.

Looks like you renamed HJT, but let's try calling it something else, right click the .exe and call it Meg.exe. If anything is hidden it should show in the next log. To be sure I would like to run a scan also, follow the directions in this link:
    http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb...ic.php?tid/33/

Post the results of that scan along with a HJT log after renaming the .exe and we will see what those results are. Let me know how the computer is running.

    Thanks

    Hi

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I updated Spybot to 1.4 and updated definitions. I also ran the latest Ad-Aware. I've removed the Java using Add/Remove Programs and AVG Anti-Spyware found something relating to it also which I deleted the associated archive for. I deleted anything AVG Anti-Spyware found.

The AVG Anti-Spyware and HijackThis (run after AVG Anti-Spyware) logs are attached.

    Thanks for your help

    Meg

G'day Meg make sure you download the newest version of Java or some things will probably stop working.
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutor...efinition.html

I need a little help from you at this point, as a result of running the spyware program and even after renaming HJT, I see no evidence of the Vundo trojan or any other malware in this log? Perhaps Norton is seeing Winfixer in your System Restore files which we will clean out before we are done:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{79C0B974-3DDE-4E57-8A58-348A58F69B17}\RP784\A0123966.exe -> Adware.WinAntiVirus : Cleaned. <<< the item can not get back on the computer unless you do a System Restore, it may be that Norton is seeing it there? Let's try this:

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and look for Winfixer, uninstall it if there and also uninstall any program you know do not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

    Use these instructions:
    http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Make sure you clean out everything the first time. Cleaning the Prefetch will slow a few boots while Windows repopulates what you need in it, but hackers will hide their junk there also.

Let's clean out those System Restore files now like this: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_nam

Make sure your restart the computer, then run Norton and post any information from the scan you question. I would also like to see a last AVG Spyware scan once the System Restore files have been purged. Please edit out any cookies that have accumuated. If you need help controling cookies, let me know.

    Thanks

    G'day

Norton's AntiVirus Full System Scan wasn't picking anything up in it's scan report but I had been getting popups after or during a scan alerting me to WinFixer. Since deleting the three files these popups listed there hasn't been a mention of WinFixer from Norton.

There was no listing for WinFixer in Add/Remove Programs and although alot of it could probably be cleaned up there were no obviously out of place programs.

I ran ATF-Cleaner and cleared out the System Restore. The AVG log follows. If you can easily give me some pointers about the cookies I'd love to hear them.

Thankyou very much for your time and help - you've given me alot more confidence that the problem is being dealt with!

    Meg

G'Day Meg, it is a fact that popups are apart of surfing the internet. I suggest you try a popup blocker unless there is one in NIS. This is the one I use: http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_xp.html I do suggest, if you try it, that you download the basic tool bar/blocker and avoid all of the resource wasting eye candy Google would like you to download. Just read carefully as you prepare, and uncheck stuff you do not require.
Cookies: most sites will try to put a cookie on your computer, I block them all. I realize you need some cookies for security, passwords, etc. These can be overridden for. This information should cover that as well. I am including both Internet Explorer (about to change and not sure if the instructions will as they move to IE-7) and Firefox if you use it (also about to upgrade any day)

    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...cy/config.mspx
    IE cookies

    http://privacy.getnetwise.org/browsi...disablecookies
    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/secu...priv_help.html
    Firefox cookies

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

If all is well I will wish you safe surfing...tashi will be by in a few days to close your topic.

    Cheers...pskelley
