    Default Computer performance

My computer's been slow today, even when I've been off-line. I did my weekly backup and found heaps of mini-image files as well. They could be, I suppose, from MS and HP emails I've reviewed in the past week.

Just thought this might be of use....

    Hello

I can see that you have a lot of programs loading with Windows. You can fix the following entries with HijackThis if you want to free your memory, these programs aren't needed to be running all the time. (this is just my recommendation, you may leave some of these running if you want)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"

    Default Startup programs

Wow! All those?? I can see at least a few right away that I can turn off. I'll double-check what the others do just to educate myself.

Thanks for the diagnosis, Jake. I'll report back. (It would be nice if I stopped being such a regular here at SNF!)

OK, I used "Fix" in HijackThis on most of the programs that were loading at startup that you said I could dispense with. There are about four or five I left because I either know I want them to continue, or I was nervous about whether I'd miss them.

Anyhow, on reboot my computer took just as long as ever to start up (~5'); but when I open an application now it starts almost instantly, which was definitely not the case before. Does that make sense? That's a lovely perk if it's going to continue.

I hope I disabled those startup items correctly. Hijackthis says it "removes" the selected items. Does that mean they're no longer available on my computer now? Or could I reverse my decision on one of them if I felt I needed to?

    Hello

Those startups won't really affect the whole reboot as the windows, drivers etc will take their time to load. So the computer runs faster now and no "low memory" alerts - that's great news

Yes the HijackThis has a backup function so you can restore those startups later if you want.

    Any questions/issues?

Ok, for now, I think. But the virtual memory alert has occurred sporadically so we won't know if all is well for maybe a week or so. I'll be in touch if I need more help - you KNOW I will!

Bless you, as always, Jake. Any way we can support you volunteers?
