    Unhappy IE7 ad popup mgrs.exe

    I am working on a laptop that has the mgrs.exe bot or trojan. I need some assistance. I have the HJT log but the bot kills any attempt to SD1.5.1 . Thanks Steve

    Nasty infection Steve, I'll see what I can do to help you. I suggest you stay offline except when troubleshooting until we get you clean.

    Read and follow the directions carefuly, the tools will not work unless you do.

    Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

    Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

    Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

    Post the combofix log and a new HJT log.

    Thanks

    When I open IE7 for the first time - another browser window pops up after about 30 seconds, but there is nothing in the web address line or in the body of the broswer, basically just a blank page.

    Now what? Is the problem corrected?
    thanks for your help so far.

    Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, please be patient, these infections do not come off your computer as easily as they got on.

    Before we start, our experts would like to have a look at this file in red:
    O2 - BHO: On The Net Search Helper - {4E8F5D76-EF5B-46C8-B35B-C86F8BD6621A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\memojqem.dll
    http://www.castlecops.com/tk40887-On...ch_Helper.html
    If you would click on do mail us in the lower right corner in this link, and attach and send a copy of this file to that address before you delete it.

    1) How to make files and folders visible:
    Click Start > Open My Computer.
    Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
    Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
    Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
    You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

    2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
    Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    3) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
    * Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    * If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    * On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    * Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    * Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    * Restart your computer.

    4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    O2 - BHO: On The Net Search Helper - {4E8F5D76-EF5B-46C8-B35B-C86F8BD6621A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\memojqem.dll

    (if you placed the next three items on your Desktop and know they are safe, you may leave them)

    Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\memojqem.dll <<< check to be sure that file is gone

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk <<< delete that file

    (these infected items where in the Kaspersky scan and may be gone, but I want you to check and delete them if you find them)

    Delete the files or folders in red if there and be very careful to delete only those

    6) Run ATF Cleaner
    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    Restart and post a new HJT log with your comments.

    Thanks

    still getting a blank ie7 window popup after about 30 seconds from opening initial ie7 window. blank page and blank address line, the blue tab in the windows says "connecting....." but nothing ever shows up or appears in the window. It might popup again after 3 or 4 minutes but then sometimes it doesn't. It will do it if I open either IE7 or Firefox, but the window that pops up is always and IE7 window.

    Short of blowing this XP Home install off, I probably will tell the user to just close this blank popup and ignore it, unless you think their is still an infection.

    thanks,
    Steve

    Even though it does not show in the HJT log, have you checked to make sure they don't have About:Blank set in IE.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...e7_basics.mspx

    Have a look at this information to see if it helps:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/945385

    Remove combofix and C:\qoobox\quarantine\ before you scan.

    Please run another Kaspersky scan to make sure we got it all, use these settings:

    Run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
    Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

    http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

    Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

    You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

    * The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Now click on Scan Settings
    * In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    * Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    * Standard
    * Scan Options:
    * Scan Archives
    * Scan Mail Bases
    * Click OK
    * Now under select a target to scan:
    * Select My Computer
    * This will program will start and scan your system.
    * The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    * Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    * Now click on the Save as Text button:
    * Save the file to your desktop.

    Then post it here. <<< no need to post a clean scan, only if you have questions. Let me know if you resolved the IE issue also.

    Thanks...Phil

    Post IE7 still blank

    I removed this one entry with HJT
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz

    The registry shows that IE7 has the correct dword values for the problem outlined in the http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/945385 web posting.

    When I refer to the IE7 being "blank", I mean that when the page pops up, there is NO TEXT in ANY of the fields.
    This is not the same as the default blank IE7 option.

    Will download and run the KOS scanner later tonight or tomorrow.
    thanks,
    Steve
