I just got hit hard by Spyware Protect 2009. It claimed I was infected and needed to get the full verison to get rid of a virus. It kept popping up like mad. I of course knew this was a scam and SpyBot got rid of it. Watch out.

I got hit by it, and now Spybot won't even install.
I followed direction on cleaning my registry, killing processes, etc.
and ran "Hijack This" as well, but still no dice.
I'm not getting the pop-up anymore, but my system runs badly,
Firefox and IE won't run (Mozilla works, and I'm using it now).
Any suggestions, anyone?
I wish our government would put some effort into protect us from
these criminals and prosecuting them instead of stupid laws which
protect us from ourselves (e.g. In Seattle adults are require to wear
bicycle helmets).

Hello,
For someone to take a look at the system, please follow the procedure in this link:
"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance)
Then start your own thread in the Malware Removal Forum where a helper will advise you when available.
Regards.

Thanks.
I'll get back to y'all (in a new thread) if I can't get rid of it...
my wife checked with her I.T. person at work, and he's gonna
loan her a CDRom with something that he thinks will help.
I've already tried a bunch of things, which may have made matters worse
(as seen in the links given above).
If that doesn't work I'll proceed per the instructions (I'll have to downlaod
a new HiJack this version - I uninstalled and deleted all spyware related
stuff as part of my efforts to clean up my system).
Hello,
Do NOT run 'FIXES' before helpers have analyzed the HJT log
Best regards.

I saw that... after trying to manually remove it.
I can't install HJT or Spybot anymore - the Malware was intercepting
installation attempts (sometimes during downloading).
I ran McAfee last night, and it found & removed a whole bunch of stuff...
I didn't have time yet to check whether it fixed my problems or not.
I may be okay... I'll try to get on my home PC tonight and check it out.
Still messed up.
I did a right click on "My Computer" and chose "scan with spybot"...
it must've found something because my system shut down part way
into the scan.
Still can't istall or run Spybot or Hijack This from my Hard Drive.
I might try running HJT from the boot disk my wife's IT person
gave her to use.
Hello,
I am sorry, but that won't work that way.
You can't click on My Computer and scan it with the single files scan from Spybot. As the name says it is a scan for single files. And My Computer is not a file.
Anyway..... try to rename Hijackthis.exe into something else and then try to run it.
That should help.
Best regards

I'll give that a try... maybe try renaming Spybot too and see if the
same trick will work for that issue (if it works for HJT).
It'd be nice if there was an executable version of Spybot on a link to I could
run it remotely.
There's an older version of it on the CDR that we got... I might see if I can
burn a newer one after I get this cleared up.
my girlfriends computer got hit by this spyware protect 2009 last night. rooting around looking for the files to kill was a waste of time. i took it to work with me to work on it some more and upon turning the computer on i get the cute little message stating "operating system not found" does anybody know if this thing has been adapted to kill windows after a certain amount of time on your system????
