Default Please Help me Eradicate: Win32.TDSS.rtk

I hope I have done this right and am following proper protocol regarding posts. I've seen others with this same issue and was tempted to simply follow directions given to them. However, after reading the the required information before posting and regarding general malware help/removal processes I realized that each case is dealt with on an individual basis and that I needed to start my own post. I just didn't want to be a burden or waste anyone's time.
In short, SB S&D keeps finding the above referenced problem (Win32.TDSS.rtk), identifies it as a trojan horse with 5 entries (all having SKYNET in them). I've attempted fixes, but apparently it is hiding and duplicating itself in a way that I don't know how to deal with. It seems to be affecting google searches in a way that redirects any search-produced links to various shopping/other search/business sites etc. I'm also running AVG Anti-virus-Free which seems unable to resolve the issue as well. I'm at my wits end with this virus/trojan horse and am humbly begging for your help!

You can't imagine how grateful I am that there are people like you willing to help. I have struggled to rid this PC of this nasty trojan horse/virus for over a week spending countless hours before making a post. If...and I like to think when you help me get rid of this I will be immensely grateful. I've read all the required information regarding how to post etc and hope I'm doing things right so far. I'm willing to dedicate as much patience and time necessary to get the job done or as much as you are willing to lend me. Thank you again in advance for at least being willing to make an attempt to help me (I know there are no guarantees).
OK, I have downloaded ERUNT and backed up my registry, disabled teatimer, downloaded Hijackthis and obtained the appropriate report. If there is anything else I need to do, or if I haven't followed directions correctly, please let me know so I can do whatever it is I need to in order to continue. Again thank you!

Welcome to Safer Networking, I wish to be sure you have viewed and understand this information.
"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance) http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please make sure you have read this information so we are on the same page.

You must have read and followed the "Before you Post" instructions.

Sounds like a rootkit infection that can be tough to remove so don't expect fast or easy. We will start the removal process like this.

    1) Please DO NOT ENABLE Spybot S&D TeaTimer while we work together.

    2) Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed

    Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Post that report and a new HJT log

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use

    3) Post also an uninstall list: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
    Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Uninstall list: I look for malware and security issues and will not know all of your programs, but you should.
Hackers are using out of date programs to infect folks more and more,
Here is a small free tool that lets you know when something needs an update if you are interested:
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ While PSI runs in the System Tray for realtime notifications, I personally prefer to turn it off in MSConfig and run it from All Programs when I want to do a check.

Adobe Reader 7.0 <<< out of date and unsafe, see this:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-100...ml?tag=nl.e433
    http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2009/04...der_issue.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/securit...apsb09-07.html
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
(if you want a smaller program, look at this one)
Foxit Reader 3.0 for Windows (make sure to uncheck any toolbars)
    http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_02
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

These Java version are very old and unsafe, see this:
    http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.p...80&postcount=2
Be aware of this information so you can opt out of anything you do not want.
Microsoft Does MSN Toolbar Distribution Deal With Java:
    http://searchengineland.com/microsof...java-15413.php
http://raproducts.org/ <<< if you have problems uninstalling the old versions, this tool will help.

Please follow the numbered order carefully.

    1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
    http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

    2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

    3) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Cleaning Prefetch may result in a few slow starts until the folder is repopulated:
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...efetch-XP.html

    4) Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
    * Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Default I think We Did it (well...more like YOU did it)!!

    Phil,
I followed all your directions thoroughly and carefully. From what I see all known (and even some I didn't know about) are solved. The PC runs like a gazelle, fast, responsive, and well...like it should!
After agonizing over this for some time trying to help my Dad out by freeing his computer of this nasty virus I finally gave up and sought out help. Best thing I could have done. I learned a lot through the process too. Again, especially on behalf of my grateful father THANK YOU!!!!!
Ok, as you requested the MBAM log file and HJT log file are below:

Thanks for the feedback, everything looks good from here. I'll say again you don't have to run PSI in the System Tray all of the time, turn it off in MSConfig and run a check once a month or so..but it's your call.
    http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/msconfig_xp.html

I'd like a look at a scan with AVG but you can do that in closing and let me know if you have any questions, let's see if we can wrap up like this.

Remove combofix from the computer like this:

    Click START then RUN
Now type or copy Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Clean the System Restore files like this:

    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Reboot

    Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

(no need to run this since it was clean last run unless you wish to)
Update MBAM and scan to be sure we missed none of the junk, there is no need to post a clean scan result.
(MBAM is yours to keep if you wish, keep it updated and run it once a month or so)

Update AVG and scan the system, to be sure it is running right and scanning clean.

    Default All is well

Ok, I did all you instructed.
    MBAM scan came back clean.
Likewise did the AVG scan (aside from some tracking cookies, but do those every really go away without being replaced almost immediately upon internet access?).
I'll post the last AVG scan below.
Thanks again for all your help in this matter, it has been indispensable.
I'm kinda a geek wanna-be, so I will actually read the info/links you provided. Thanks also for that.
Take care and all the best!

Everything look ok, you can clean the virus vault under history at the top of the AVG interface.

Information to help control cookies is here:
